Even Formula 1's fastest driver is hitting the brakes for GTA 6.
When you're one of the most successful Formula 1 drivers in history, with seven world championships under your belt and a packed racing schedule that takes you around the globe, you'd think video games would be the last thing on your mind.
Unless we're talking about Grand Theft Auto 6, of course. Lewis Hamilton has proved through countless interviews in the past that even the world's elite athletes are just like the rest of us when it comes to our video game obsessions - and he's even more one of us than we thought.
Speaking to fans ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver confessed that he's planning to clear his entire work calendar when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally releases in May 2026 ( if it releases then, that is).
While discussing his love for Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and Gran Turismo, the racing legend's excitement peaked when the topic turned to Grand Theft Auto. The best part? The timing might actually work in Hamilton's favor. The current Formula 1 calendar shows a convenient gap around May 6 until the last week of May and another one a week after.
Hamilton could theoretically have just enough time to dive into Vice City in between racing in Miami and Montreal and just before the prestigious Monaco race in June. Originally slated for a Fall 2025 release, Rockstar Games pushed the launch to May 26, 2026, citing the need for additional polish to achieve their creative vision without limitations.
Despite the delay, or perhaps because of it, the hype has only intensified, especially after confirming that the footage from the second trailer was shot on a base PlayStation 5. With the release date confirmed, social media has been flooded with posts from gamers preparing elaborate excuses to take time off when the game releases.
The fact that even a world champion athlete is joining their ranks only validates what many have been feeling. As May 2026 approaches, it seems clear that Hamilton isn't the only one bracing for the impact of this "iceberg" of a game.
From professional athletes to everyday gamers and even companies like Twitch, Sony, Ford, and even F1, the entire world is preparing to for what promises to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in history.
