The first real word on how Grand Theft Auto VI performs on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X comes from Rockstar North co-studio head, Rob Nelson, courtesy of Davy Jones. The Brazilian influencer was one of the content creators given a hands-off look at the game before the Extended Look premiere and he shared that Nelson told him the console builds are currently running at 30 FPS during development.

However, Nelson was careful with his phrasing. Asked about a possible 60 FPS option, he said the technical team would need to weigh in before he could say if it's coming and he didn't rule it out either. He also did not get into resolution, ray tracing, or other graphical technicalities, and Rockstar Games itself has yet to confirm anything.

None so far

The only thing confirmed is the current 30 FPS build. Everything else is still open.

None of this breaks from Rockstar's own pattern, for what it is worth. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched at 30 FPS on console, and GTA 5 only reached 60 FPS later, once it moved to newer hardware via the launch of Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced. The footage shown, captured on a base PS5, is consistent with a game that runs on 30 frames per second, and what the public just watched lines up with what Nelson described in the room.

The good news? Rockstar still has a few months left to polish things up. Nelson's statement suggests that could still be working out how to make the game run at higher resolutions with a higher FPS. It's just that, for the sake of the Netflix premiere, the console build they used is running at 30 FPS. This leaves the door wide open for higher frame rates down the line, and we'll be sure to report the final performance numbers once official.

In the meantime, our breakdowns of the systems, the free-roam activities, the couple at its center, and the reported 80-hour playthrough cover what else the preview run turned up.
