A new rumor suggests Sony's PS5 Pro will be the only console capable of running the game at a smooth 60 frames per second.

Rockstar Games is set to challenge the long-standing perception of Grand Theft Auto and AAA games by launching Grand Theft Auto 6 at 30 frames per second on consoles, a standard that was once considered unshakable.

A new report suggests that Sony and Rockstar have been quietly working together (aside of that loud marketing deal) on achieving something that many other studios are struggling to do: getting a current-gen AAA title like GTA 6 to run at a smooth 60 frames per second on the PS5 Pro.

The collaboration reportedly involves PlayStation engineers diving deep into the PS5 Pro's new technology to guarantee that GTA 6 runs at 60 FPS across multiple graphical settings, and collaborating with Rockstar's developers.

According to industry insider Detective Seeds, this is in line with Sony's plans to release a major software update on May 2026, which, as we all know from the gut-wrenching announcement a few months back, is also the same month GTA 6 will launch next year.

While Sony hasn't officially confirmed any update, the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together in a way that makes this report increasingly believable. Here's the kicker: this 60 FPS experience is exclusive to PS5 Pro owners. Those playing on the standard PS5 will likely be stuck with the traditional 30 frames per second.

According to the same sources, this partnership between Sony and Rockstar could benefit other upcoming Rockstar titles as well. While specific games weren't mentioned, this likely pertains to potential performance upgrades for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Maybe even Grand Theft Auto V, and particularly current-gen re-releases like Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Expanded and Enhanced will get included too. We shouldn't discount the possibility that these benefits will trickle down to the rumored re-release of Grand Theft Auto 4, which, according to sources, may not necessarily be a full remaster.

In any case, this collaboration makes perfect business sense for the two long-time partners. Sony gets a killer app that showcases the PS5 Pro's capabilities, while Rockstar gets technical assistance from some of the industry's best engineers.

Based on this rumor, it's no wonder then that the sales of the PS5 are expected to slow down later this year following previous expectations because of the delay. Any slowdown will be more than compensated when the game hits.

With that said, Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter previously expressed skepticism about the PS5 Pro's ability to run GTA 6 at 60 FPS, citing the console's CPU as a potential bottleneck since it uses the same processor as the base PS5.

It'll definitely be interesting how Rockstar and Sony will achieve this. Perhaps they have found creative solutions to overcome these hardware limitations. As with any leak, it's important to approach this information with healthy skepticism. Neither Sony nor Rockstar have commented on these reports.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Take-Two Interactive's next earnings call next month.
