New tech being cooked up by AMD and Sony could make the upcoming GTA 6 even more visually impressive than expected.

In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, Mark Cerny shed light on the ongoing collaboration between Sony and AMD, known as Project Amethyst, and its potential to revolutionize console gaming visuals, particularly in titles designed to push the PlayStation 5 Pro to its limit, like the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is already capable of delivering enhanced graphics that are more impressive compared to its predecessor. However, Cerny revealed that Sony aims to implement an upscaling technology similar to AMD's cutting-edge FSR 4, a next-generation upscaler designed to improve on the current PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.

PSSR is already impressive enough as it is. It's capable of transforming 720p images into crisp 4K visuals while adding intricate particle effects. The upcoming FSR 4-inspired technology promises to take this a step further, potentially matching or even surpassing the visual fidelity offered by high-end PC graphics cards. Cerny emphasized that the goal is to achieve "same output for same input" as FSR 4, despite the differences in hardware architecture between the PS5 Pro and AMD's latest graphics cards.

The collaboration between Sony and AMD, formalized under Project Amethyst, has already yielded significant results. Cerny disclosed that the neural network and training methods used in FSR 4's upscaler were the first fruits of this partnership. While the full implementation of this FSR 4-like technology on the PS5 Pro is still at least a year away, Cerny assured that Sony is encouraging developers to utilize the current PSSR technology in the meantime, which has already yielded positive results.

The close relationship between Sony, Take-Two Interactive, and Rockstar Games pretty much guarantees that the Grand Theft Auto developers will get first dibs on whatever technology the PlayStation manufacturers are cooking up. We've already heard rumors of an exclusive marketing deal between the two companies with Sony expecting a huge uptick in sales of the PS5 Pro around the same time GTA 6 is released following a record holiday season.

So why wouldn't it take advantage of this even further by using GTA 6 to advertise the capabilities of the newly improved FSSR for the PS5 Pro? We'll know more for sure what Rockstar and Sony have planned for GTA 6 once it's officially released later this year barring any unforeseen delays.

In the meantime, players who would like to see what GTA 6 could potentially look like can check out Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced a free upgrade on PC, which brings Grand Theft Auto V up to par with Grand Theft Auto V Expanded and Enhanced but with certain PC-exclusive improvements, including support for AMD FSR.
