With Borderlands 4 in September, GTA 6 be aiming for an October release.
While neither Rockstar Games nor Grand Theft Auto 6 was anywhere near the recently concluded State of Play showcase by Sony, people were still keeping a close eye on it. Why? Because one of Take-Two Interactive's subsidiaries, Gearbox Entertainment, was part of the lineup, and their latest announcement revealed a lot about the parent company's plans.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously confirmed that their three biggest releases of this year will be Mafia: The Old Country, Borderlands 4, and GTA 6. Before today, we didn't have a release date for either one of these three releases. This all changed after the release of the latest trailer for Borderlands 4, which confirmed the game's launch on September 23.
The company has already revealed plans for a new Mafia game in the summer, and now with Borderlands 4 taking the September slot, the window for GTA 6 appears to be narrowing to October or early November. This timing would align with Rockstar's previous success, as Red Dead Redemption 2 saw a late October release in 2018 to critical acclaim and commercial success.
The positioning of Borderlands 4 in September suggests that Take-Two is looking to give each of its major titles breathing room in the market. It's highly unlikely that the company would release GTA 6 in the same month as Borderlands 4, given the potential for the titles to cannibalize each other's sales (well, the potential for GTA 6 to cannibalize Borderlands 4, if we're being honest). This leaves October and November as the most probable months for GTA 6's debut.
If true, this would allow GTA 6 to capture the lucrative holiday shopping season while avoiding direct competition with other major releases that typically flood the market in November and December. However, the gaming industry is no stranger to delays, and there's always the possibility that GTA 6 could face setbacks. Take-Two has expressed confidence in meeting the Fall 2025 release window, but the complexity and scale of modern game development leave room for potential complications.
The company's reputation for quality and attention to detail suggests that they will not rush the release, preferring to deliver a polished product that meets the sky-high expectations of their fanbase. In the meantime, fans can look forward to a heavier-than-usual marketing push for GTA 6 starting in April and for the next couple of years as the game is expected to release on the PC eventually, and possibly, even the Nintendo Switch 2.
