With GTA 6 delayed to 2026, Rockstar might have a surprise in store.
Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most loved games in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, though that isn't saying much when most titles in the series have their diehards. Often mentioned in physics engine comparisons with GTA V, hardcore series fans have long wanted to see Niko Bellic and Liberty City get the love from Rockstar Games that it clearly deserves in the form of a remaster - which per one insider is coming soon.
According to Tez2, his sources at Rockstar have hinted that a remaster of the 2008 title is in development and that it could be released on the PlayStation 5 later this year. The dataminer claims this remaster is "one more reason" why Take-Two Interactive took down the Liberity City Preservation Project mod for Grand Theft Auto V earlier this year.
Tez2's track record when it comes to datamining is second to none. The insider was one of the first to blow the whistle on several in-development projects at Rockstar, including the recent release of GTA V on the PC Game Pass and the Bully: Anniversary Edition update on mobile devices. Rockstar has done an excellent job making classic GTA titles available for modern audiences. Unfortunately, games like Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, and GTA 4 remain unavailable to play on newer platforms, particularly the PlayStation 5.
While GTA 4 technically benefits from certain improvements made on the Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X as a backwards compatible title, a proper remaster is still not available. With Rockstar acquiring Video Games Deluxe, renaming it to Rockstar Australia, and fans looking for something to sink their teeth into following the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, now is arguably the best time to change that.
On that note, the newly acquired studio is responsible for fixing the disastrous Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, so their porting chops aren't in doubt. This wouldn't be the first time talks of a GTA 4 remaster would emerge. It was heavily implied to be in development years ago, alongside the Red Dead Redemption remaster, which has since been released.
With the takedown of the Liberty City Preservation Project, calls for the remaster only grew stronger. Only time will tell if Rockstar will indeed have a consolation prize up their sleeves for hopeful fans, especially given that all seems to be forgiven now following the release of the second GTA 6 trailer.
We just wish Rockstar would take a page from Bethesda's book as far as modder relations go. The renowned RPG publisher recently released a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and instead of legally steamrolling a popular fan-made remaster project, they sent the team game keys and reassurances.
If we're lucky, the wait for an official confirmation of the GTA 4 remaster might not take long. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is set to take the proverbial stage on May 15 at the company's next earnings call.
