Ford just did something with GTA 6 that more car companies should try.
Rockstar Games continues to show its impact beyond gaming, with one of the world's oldest and biggest auto companies taking inspiration from Grand Theft Auto 6 in the unveiling of its latest vehicle. Ford recently released a new trailer for the Ford Capri, taking heavy inspiration from the second most-viewed video game trailer of all time.
It doesn't hide this fact either. The Grand Theft Auto -inspired commercial uses the same sweeping aerial shot, albeit this one isn't set in a fictional city like Vice City but Capri, an island in Italy, after which the quintessential American automaker's latest model is confusingly named.
It even goes as far as to use similar transitions with a montage of social media shorts, including a goat, news of animals reportedly on the loose in Capri City, and a lady holding a video game controller on each hand, complete with a sequence involving a woman walking through a store—just like what Lucia and Jason did in the first trailer.
The 57-second trailer ends with an on-the-nose reference to GTA 6 by scratching out the "May 2026" date and confirming its global launch on "August 2025". Two years after confirming the release of the first GTA 6 trailer, Rockstar's influence around the world continues to show.
When the release date confirmation of the first trailer dropped, every industry posted similar teaser posts with similar vibes. You don't see that often if at all. As the kids say these days, "real recognize real." Ford knew exactly what they were doing by referencing the most hyped game of all time, whose second trailer set a new record for most views across the entertainment industry.
It's a genius move that, frankly enough, more companies should try to do, especially with Rockstar expected to ramp up the marketing for GTA 6 over the next year, and considering how much traction individual creators have gotten from recreating either one of the GTA 6 trailers.
Unsurprisingly, there's a couple of Ford and Ford-like vehicles scattered throughout the GTA franchise. The in-game car company, Vapid, is inspired by Ford.
GTA 6 is currently set to release on May 26, 2026 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
