Grand Theft Auto V (commonly abbreviated as GTA V or GTA 5) is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, a label of Take-Two Interactive.5 It is the fifth numbered entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the fifteenth overall, marking the fifth title in the series' "HD Universe." Released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it was later re-released on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and later PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Set in the fictional state of San Andreas, it follows three protagonists whose criminal lives become intertwined.
The game’s shared world also underpins Grand Theft Auto Online. Grand Theft Auto VI is its successor in the numbered series.
Bloomberg reported in October 2026 that GTA V had sold 230 million copies. The report does not specify whether that total measures units shipped to retailers or purchases by players.4
Gameplay and Core Mechanics
Grand Theft Auto V introduced a new multi-protagonist system that allows players to switch between three characters - Michael, Franklin, and Trevor - at nearly any time. Each character has their own lifestyle, schedule, and unique special ability: Franklin can slow time while driving, Michael can enter bullet-time during combat, and Trevor can activate a damage-boosting rage mode.
The game world includes Los Santos and Blaine County, offering diverse urban and rural environments. The "Random Events" system introduces optional encounters, such as returning stolen items or intercepting thieves, enhancing immersion.
Heists are central to both gameplay and narrative. Several offer a choice of approaches or crew members, with the outcome influenced by planning and personnel. The player-made “Car Steal Missions” mod adds vehicle-theft jobs that involve stealing a marked vehicle and delivering it to the docks.14
Synopsis
Setting and Timeframe
The game is set in a satirical version of Southern California1, primarily in Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County. In its marketing, Rockstar presented the setting as its most ambitious to date, capturing themes of materialism, fame, and economic instability. The geography includes urban sprawl, mountains, deserts, and an explorable ocean floor.
The story takes place in 2013, about five years after Grand Theft Auto IV.
Several in-game details mention late-summer and autumn months:
- The calendar in Trevor’s trailer shows August.15
- A calendar in Lester’s house shows September.15
- During “Cleaning out the Bureau,” the calendar in janitor Harvey Molina’s apartment shows September.15
- A female barber’s greeting mentions October.
- In the Enhanced Edition’s Monkey Mosaics activity, the message from Space Monkey after photographing the street artist promotes a screen release “this holiday.”
These calendar props, ambient dialogue and optional-activity message do not establish exact start and end dates for the main story.
Characters and Plot
The narrative follows three criminals: Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber; Franklin Clinton, an ambitious repo man seeking a better life; and Trevor Philips, Michael's erratic former partner turned rural drug lord. Their paths converge after Franklin meets Michael, who is soon pulled back into crime. Trevor later discovers Michael is alive, setting the trio on a collision course.
Together, they navigate conflicts with corrupt FIB agents and corporate villains, undertaking a series of heists. Their story critiques modern American society, touching on themes like corruption, celebrity, and familial decay, in a world where success trumps morality.
Development and Multi-Generational Releases
Announced in 2011, Grand Theft Auto V debuted in September 2013 to critical acclaim. Rockstar later re-released the game for newer platforms, each time with enhancements. The 2014 "Enhanced Edition" for PS4 and Xbox One, followed by a 2015 PC release, brought improved visuals and a first-person mode. In 2022, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions added faster loading and a choice of graphics modes. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, Fidelity uses native 4K with ray tracing and targets 30 FPS; Performance uses upscaled 4K and targets 60 FPS, while Performance RT adds ray tracing to that 60 FPS target. On Xbox Series S, Fidelity uses upscaled 4K and targets 30 FPS, while Performance uses 1080p and targets 60 FPS.1213
The most recent PC version, often referred to as GTA 5 Enhanced , represents the latest iteration.
Later releases added weapons, vehicles and activities, while Grand Theft Auto Online continued to expand through free content updates.1113
Writing the three protagonists
Dan Houser recalled developing the three-protagonist premise while writing the game's early synopsis. Michael and Franklin were already taking shape when he conceived Trevor late in a writing session. The timing refers to the formation of the story outline, not a character added near the end of production.3
Houser described the contrast as a way to complicate the player's response to the characters: Michael's charm could conceal his hypocrisy, while Trevor's appalling behaviour coexisted with a personal code. This is Houser's explanation of the writing, rather than a declaration that either character is the story's single moral authority.3
Grand Theft Auto Online
Grand Theft Auto Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after the base game, with support for up to 16 players.10 The PS4 and Xbox One versions increased that limit to 30 players in November 2014.11 Players create their own characters and rise through criminal ranks by completing missions, heists, and races. Money and reputation unlock vehicles, weapons, and real estate.
The mode grew steadily with free content updates, adding heists, business ventures, and new areas like Cayo Perico. Monetization includes GTA$ purchases and the GTA+ subscription. Rockstar released GTA Online as a standalone title for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022.1213
Reception and Legacy
On September 18, 2013, Take-Two estimated first-day retail sales of more than $800 million, excluding Japan and Brazil.6 Two days later, it reported more than $1 billion in retail sales during the first three days and said this was the fastest an entertainment property had reached that sum at the time.7 Guinness World Records reported 11.21 million copies sold in the first 24 hours in its October 8, 2013 record announcement.8 In its August 7, 2025 quarterly filing, Take-Two reported more than 215 million units sold-in worldwide.9
At the 2014 BAFTA Games Awards, Grand Theft Auto V won British Game, Game Design and Multiplayer.2
The 'GAT V' pack for Saints Row IV is one example of how GTA V has been parodied in other games.
