Michael De Santa, formerly Michael Townley, is one of the three playable protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V, alongside Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. He is a retired bank robber whose comfortable life in Los Santos has left him restless and dissatisfied.1

Story

Michael secretly survives the failed North Yankton robbery and begins a new life in Los Santos with his family. Years later, his return to crime brings him into partnership with Franklin and reunites him with Trevor, forcing him to confront the deal and betrayals behind his disappearance.

His story combines large-scale heists with attempts to repair his relationships with Amanda, Jimmy and Tracey. Michael also pursues his interest in film production while trying to decide whether he can leave his criminal life behind.

Gameplay

  • Role: Playable protagonist and experienced heist planner.
  • Family: Husband to Amanda and father to Jimmy and Tracey.
  • Partners: Works closely with Franklin and Trevor.
  • Special ability: Slows time during combat, allowing more precise shooting.

Background

Michael did not enter formal witness protection. His life in Los Santos follows a private arrangement with FIB agent Dave Norton, concealed from Trevor and the wider public.

GTA Online

Michael returns in A Safehouse in the Hills, where he and Amanda welcome the player into the community of luxury homeowners. For the mansion update and its missions, see the Safehouse in the Hills guide.2

After the Kortz Center Heist, Michael sends the player a text saying the robbery made him think of them. The message does not establish that he took part in the heist or confirm a future mission.3
