Dan Houser (born November 1973) is an English video game producer and writer, best known as the co-founder of Rockstar Games alongside his brother, Sam Houser. Serving as the Vice President of Creativity and the lead writer for many of the studio's most acclaimed titles, including the Grand Theft Auto series and Red Dead Redemption, Houser was a primary creative force behind the company's success. Following his departure from Rockstar in 2020, the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will be the first mainline entry in the franchise developed without his direct involvement.
Background
Daniel Houser was born in London in November 1973 to actress Geraldine Moffat and solicitor Walter Houser1. He was educated at St Paul's School and later studied geography at the University of Oxford. From a young age, both he and his brother Sam shared a fascination with storytelling, influenced by American crime films, cult classics, and Spaghetti Westerns they watched at a local video library. Despite an early interest in becoming musicians, their path led toward video games. In 1995, Houser began working at BMG Interactive, where he and his brother encountered a game in development called Race'n'Chase. They signed the game, renamed it Grand Theft Auto, and after BMG Interactive was sold to Take-Two Interactive in 1998, they moved to New York and founded Rockstar Games.

Despite the high profile of the games he created, Dan Houser and his brother have historically shied away from the celebrity spotlight, preferring to let the Rockstar Games brand take precedence over individual personalities. His work reflects a focus on building intricate worlds and complex narratives.

Following his departure from Rockstar, Houser founded Absurd Ventures, where he was joined by former Rockstar colleagues Lazlow Jones and Michael Unsworth, who serve as executive producer and head of story, respectively4. He also serves on the advisory board for Revolving Games, a blockchain game studio founded by Saad Zaeem.5
