A modder has found a new way to replay Liberty City before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19. A creator who goes by skiredd has just released Liberty Saga, a mod that stitches Grand Theft Auto IV and its two expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, into a single playthrough with Grand Theft Auto V-style character switching.

skiredd announced the release on October 29, calling it the best way to experience the three stories as one intertwined trinity. Instead of playing the base game and its episodes separately, you move between Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz and Luis Lopez the way you swap between GTA V's Michael, Franklin and Trevor in the fifth game.

According to the author this is more than a model swap. The mod goes so far as to change the game state so you get to play each character's missions and side activities as that character.

The mod even forces the missions into chronological order, so the three campaigns follow the in-universe timeline and the crossover moments. It doesn't stop there either. The protagonists you aren't controlling will stay active in the world too. Leave one behind and, the author says, that character will keep the car where you parked it, drive around, walk the streets or stop to eat, which is meant to make Liberty City feel alive rather than frozen around whoever you are playing.

Where to get it
Out now on the author's Discord, with Nexus Mods to follow

Everything here comes from skiredd's own posts, with the mod out now and a Nexus Mods release still pending.

Liberty Saga is built for the PC Complete Edition of Grand Theft Auto IV and needs game version 1.2.0.59 with the latest FusionFix, the community patch most modern GTA IV setups already run. The download is out now through the author's Discord. skiredd says it will go up on Nexus Mods once their support team clears it.

Older Grand Theft Auto games keep drawing modders back. In fact, we have followed GTA V-style switching coming to the city before. Liberty Saga is the most complete version of that idea yet, a full replay of Niko, Johnny and Luis right as attention turns to the next game.
