Rockstar Games is locking shops, salons, tattoo parlors, side quests, and missions behind the most expensive edition of Grand Theft Auto VI at launch. The Ultimate Edition, a $100 paywall, has ruffled a fair few feathers, and it definitely isn't helping that the company is also dealing with the potential fallout of the physical disc controversy.
Retailers, for example, are boycotting the code-in-a-box physical copies, with some even launching a petition. Yet, none of this noise will stop GTA 6 from becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history if it already hasn't set that record.
We're not defending the pricing, it's merely an observation. People on social media are saying one thing, but actual purchases tell us another.
Sure, the precedent Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar are setting is worrisome. Every publisher will inevitably copy this tactic of selling actual gameplay content at a higher price, because locking the full experience of the game behind another $20 premium will inevitably work. It's not dumb to complain about this. Yet, the uncomfortable reality won't change.

The first thing you need to know is that the next Grand Theft Auto, selling for $80, is a complete game. Rockstar isn't forcing you to pay $100. The $80 version has the entire campaign, full map, and complete story. Everything behind the $100 copy is supplementary. They aren't part of the core experience. Most players will play through the story of Lucia and Jason, fall in love with Vice City and Leonida, and probably never once notice what they did not buy, so long as they don't pay attention to all the spoilers online.

Fourth, the controversy is marketing for the upsell. $20 isn't a lot for most people. They'll see that they're getting more for $100 and they'll buy it. Already, this insider claims that the Ultimate Edition accounts for 72% of pre-orders. If GTA 6 ends up selling 20 million copies in pre-orders alone, that's roughly 15 million copies sold at $100 each. Everyone talking about the Ultimate Edition is freely advertising it. Rockstar loses nothing from this controversy.
The main reason to care for the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition now is that it will normalize this practice. Consumer expectations are changing, and it will change for the worse financially because of this. The $80 Standard will quietly become the "incomplete" version in everyone's mind.
As for the disc issue, it's genuinely separate and more serious. Code-in-a-box is bad for game preservation and consumer rights regardless of whether it dents revenue.
