Fresh off the earnings call and Netflix's Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look announcement, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick is doing his usual rounds of interviews. After spending some time with Jason Schreier, he sat down with CNBC’s Squawk Box to offer a clearer picture of how Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders are actually shaping up. When the conversation turned to the two price points, Zelnick pushed back on the idea that demand is even, saying:

Actually, it is skewing more to the premium edition. That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering now.

Although he still refuses to give a number, his statement lines up with what many expected. The people putting money down this early are the ones most likely to want every exclusive vehicle, weapon variant, store, and side activity Rockstar has locked behind the Ultimate Edition.

The actual sales may still split differently once the game's launch is closer and more casual buyers enter the picture, but right now the $100 version is winning among the more hardcore Grand Theft Auto fans.

Zelnick did not leave the pricing conversation there. He spent time explaining why Take-Two and Rockstar settled on $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the premium one in the first place.

He pointed to Grand Theft Auto V as the clearest proof of long-term value:

We’ve sold 230 million units and it’s continued to perform through three console generations. So in that case, it was and remains the standard bearer not just for our company, but also for the industry over 13 years.

He was careful not to claim GTA 6 will match that run, but the history is the foundation for the current strategy. Finally, Zelnick doubled down on what he said earlier about delivering value:

We’ve established a $80 price point, $100 price point for the regular edition, and the premium edition. And I think most people felt that if we wanted to exert it, we had a great deal of pricing power. Our job though, as we see it, is to deliver always way more value to the consumer than what we charge. And we want to do that over and over and over again.

He added the consumer experience is “the intersection of the thing itself and what you paid for it,” and that the goal is for people to feel thrilled rather than priced out. “We would never want people to feel like this is out of my range.”

Whether the extra content feels essential or like a convenient upsell will only become clear once players get their hands on both versions.

Ironically, an $80 base price already sits above the previous generation’s standard and the Ultimate Edition asks another $20 for content threaded through the single-player story, so Rockstar and Take-Two has already priced out plenty of gamers who would prefer to spend less, especially in this economy. The only reason they can get away with this is because this is GTA 6, and Zelnick's own comments on the pre-order skew line up with what consumers have repeatedly said and shown that they're willing to pay whatever to play it.

After all, when unexpected stories like this grandma going ahead and buying a more expensive Xbox Series X to play GTA 6 in a few month's time pop up, you know that GTA 6 is already tapping buyers beyond the usual gaming audience.

For now, the early pre-order data suggests the most dedicated fans are happy to pay the premium. As we've already mentioned, Zelnick is still refusing to attach hard numbers to the pre-order performance, calling the overall demand unprecedented while stressing that pre-orders aren't final. The skew toward the higher edition is one of the few concrete details he's willing to share.

Taken together, the comments paint a picture of strong early demand concentrated among the players most willing to spend, paired with a carefully worded defense of the new price structure.

GTA 6 is still more than three months from its November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The avid fans have already made peace with the edition decision. Everyone else is still watching the price tags and waiting for the real marketing push to begin.
