Grand Theft Auto 6 will not have a physical disc at launch. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Rockstar and Take-Two have no plans for one anytime soon. The only physical edition shipping on November 19 is a code in a box.
Don't believe the rumors, the hype, or the fake screenshots. Rockstar Games isn't budging. It will not release a physical disc for Grand Theft Auto VI at all, and The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed it. Citing an unnamed but very reliable source, the entertainment-focused publication says that Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive are basically paying no mind to the backlash and aren't even thinking about releasing a physical disc for the next Grand Theft Auto.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously mentioned that GTA 6 will have a significant "physical presence," but as it turns out, it's no more than the code-in-a-box version shipping in November.
With that said, the phrasing used, "no plans anytime soon", isn't definitive by any means. The phrasing leaves the door open a crack for a disc release much later, a year out or more, if demand and circumstances change. Rockstar has released updated editions of games well after launch before.
So the accurate read is not "a disc will never exist," it is "there is no disc planned in the near or medium term, and anyone hoping for one at or near launch should give that up." A distant possibility is not a plan, and you should not buy based on a maybe that far out.
What this means for you is simple and a little final. If you wanted a GTA 6 disc on your shelf, the realistic answer is now that you are not getting one, certainly not at launch, and probably not for a long time after. The code-in-a-box is the physical edition that we're all getting. The digital version is identical but also better in that you'll get your copy right away. Either way, there is no disc waiting in December to reward your patience.
Again, the discless launch for what's set to be the biggest game of this generation is the reality, and the initial hope was built on a possibility because of the still-ongoing backlash. Collectors should plan accordingly.
When GTA 6 launches on November 19, you'll get a box with a code in it. That's the physical edition, and for now, that should put an end to the disc story.
