Developers are making rapid progress on this unofficial port, potentially beating GTA 6 to release.
We're getting Vice City on Dreamcast before GTA 6?! Insert obligatory skull emoji. As if bringing Grand Theft Auto III to the SEGA Dreamcast wasn't challenging enough, the same group of dedicated modders are now attempting to bring the iconic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the same now-defunct platform. The best part? The team, led by developer SKMP, has already made significant progress on the GTA: Vice City port.
Early footage shared on X shows GTA: Vice City shows the game running on Sega's last console, complete with its signature neon-soaked aesthetics and open-world gameplay. While the initial video lacked audio and displayed some graphical glitches, a subsequent update revealed that sound implementation is well underway with more updates expected to follow suit.
Originally released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, GTA: Vice City quickly became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 17.5 million copies across various platforms. Its unique blend of 1980s nostalgia, engaging storyline, and groundbreaking open-world design cemented its place in gaming history. It has since been ported and remastered to other platforms, including in an official capacity with the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and a now-banned mod, GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition.
Similar to GTA 3 , porting GTA: Vice City to the Dreamcast poses several technical challenges. The game's size is a major concern, as Vice City's original file size exceeds the capacity of the Dreamcast's GD-ROM. However, the development team has innovative solutions in mind, including potentially removing the game's radio stations to reduce file size.
As for the Sega Dreamcast, the discontinued console remains a fan-favorite among homebrew developers. Over the years, the console has seen numerous unofficial ports and projects, including adaptations of Super Mario 64, Counter-Strike, and most recently, the aforementioned GTA 3 port by the same people.
It's unclear when GTA: Vice City might be available to play, but the rapid progress made by the development team suggests it won't take as long as their debut project - they've got plenty of experience to rely on this time around. It wouldn't be surprising if we'll get a chance to play the game before Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives later this year, presumably between the months of October and December.
Speaking of, the timing of this port is particularly interesting. Like GTA 6, GTA: Vice City is set in the Miami-inspired fictional setting, Vice City. Although both games are set in different universes, eagle-eyed fans have already spotted what could potentially be the Vercetti Estate, owned by the GTA: Vice City protagonist, Tommy Vercetti, in the first GTA 6 trailer.
