Grand Theft Auto V is experiencing a resurgence on Steam, approaching its record player count from 2015 nearly a decade after its PC release.
Within a few days of launching on PC, Grand Theft Auto V beat The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the then-record number of concurrent users on Steam for a game that wasn't made by Valve. Of course, things have changed since, and many more games have seen plenty more players flock the digital games distribution platform - that doesn't mean it isn't worth celebrating GTA V reaching a similar milestone nearly ten years after it became available on PC.
As per SteamDB, the last time that GTA V hit over 300,000 active players was in April 2015 and the combined player count of Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Legacy has been hovering around that number since March 4 with each game individually ranked among the most-played games on Steam over the past week.
Considering we haven't even hit the weekend yet, GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy could combine to reach well over 400,000 players soon, beating the game's original record player count on Steam at 364,548 players.
GTA V Enhanced, a free upgrade to the original PC release of GTA 5, has been a huge success for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive so far. Although there have been a couple of speedbumps, like the uncertainty surrounding its release on the Epic Games Store and migration issues, resulting in the game getting negative reviews on Steam, the overall sentiment seems to be positive. Many appreciate being able to enjoy Los Santos in a literally new light on desktops capable of pushing the current iteration of the RAGE engine to its limit.
While often unannounced, Rockstar is currently hard at work issuing fixes to the multiple issues currently plaguing GTA 5 Enhanced following its launch, pushing out a third update in as many days.
As for the next game in the franchise, all that we still have to go on for Grand Theft Auto 6 is its first trailer and its Fall 2025 release window, which is definitely after Borderlands 4 hits the storeshelves. Everything else is pure speculation, including the most recent rumors that the next trailer is coming out next month.
