Rockstar Games has announced that A Safehouse in the Hills, a massive new update launching December 10, will let players purchase luxury mansions complete with features that make previous properties look like budget motels. What better way to introduce these sprawling estates than by bringing back the man, the myth, the legend himself, Michael De Santa?
Michael's involvement appears to center on welcoming players to the exclusive Vinewood Hills neighborhood. His return marks a rare crossover between Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, which are still canonically set in the same universe - its understandable if you have forgotten that between the orbital lasers, zombie apocalypse and other outlandish content.
The centerpiece of the update is the introduction of Prix Luxury Real Estate, a company offering three different mansion properties in some of Los Santos' most desirable locations. Each mansion comes with ostentatious trophy cabinets where you can display your achievements, a private salon for relaxation, and perhaps most surprisingly, animal kennels for domesticated companions.
The garage facilities represent a significant upgrade from standard properties as well. These elegant and artfully lit spaces can house your vehicle collection in style, with an optional car podium feature that lets you showcase your favorite ride like a piece of automotive art. Long-time players especially will have a car collection vast enough to make the most of the extra space.
Beyond just looking impressive, these mansions offer practical benefits for players focused on making money. Each property includes a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence assistant named Haviland, who can help with both professional and personal tasks. The mansions also come with an optional private security detail to help protect your investment and keep unwanted visitors at bay. Players can also add an armory on the property grounds for weapons storage and customization, along with a vehicle workshop for maintaining and upgrading their collection.
Entry into this exclusive real estate market doesn't come cheap, however, although the exact pricing remains unknown. Fortunately, Rockstar is offering a special promotion to prepare your finances - by completing three New Listings missions before December 7, players can unlock Gold Tier status with Prix Luxury Real Estate, which provides a preferred rate discount of two million dollars off the purchase price.
This VIP program offers additional incentives beyond just the discount. Players who reach Gold Tier will receive the Black Rockstar Varsity Crewneck added to their wardrobe on December 10 when the update launches. They'll also get GTA$1 million as a bonus deposited into their Maze Bank account within 72 hours of completion. Even players who simply log into GTA Online by December 7 can claim Black Tier rewards, including a free Übermacht Revolter sports car.
The update extends well beyond just luxury real estate. Rockstar is introducing new story missions that involve stopping the development of a mass surveillance network. While details remain scarce, the missions promise action-packed gameplay that should appeal to players regardless of whether they can afford the new properties.

Vehicle enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to as well. The update includes multiple new automobiles, including supercars such as the Vapid FMJ MK V, described as the latest in a long lineage of premium performance vehicles. GTA+ members get a particularly sweet deal here, receiving week-long early access to this car along with various perks for mansion owners.
The update also adds compatibility for Hao's Special Works modifications to additional vehicles, allowing more cars to receive extreme performance upgrades. Several vehicles, including previously defenseless aircraft, are gaining missile lock-on jammer compatibility, potentially shifting the balance in combat situations. New law enforcement vehicles and drift-spec variants round out the automotive additions.
Perhaps the most significant long-term addition is the new Mission Creator. This comprehensive toolkit allows players to design and publish their own missions using sophisticated game mechanics, custom objectives, and placeable actors. Players could create custom maps and races already, many of which ended up with the honor of being featured by Rockstar, but now the community content scene has a whole new dimension to explore.
The update launches on December 10 across all platforms currently supporting GTA Online: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC.
