Grand Theft Auto V is the highest-grossing piece of media of all time, earning well over $8.5 billion in lifetime revenue.
As if the expectations for Grand Theft Auto 6 weren't already high enough, the showrunner of HBO's The Last of Us just compared the upcoming sixthquel to the bible.
In a recent interview with Variety, Craig Mazin explained that Hollywood will be paying close attention to how GTA 6 performs, even going as far as to say that GTA 6 will be "the largest selling piece of media ever — not including the Bible."
For context, the most conservative estimates claim that the bible has sold at least 5 billion copies over its lifetime, which is exponentially more than what Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold, or even the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise. But Mazin isn't exactly saying that GTA 6 will outsell the bible, in case that wasn't clear.
But using the bible as a reference is valid, especially since the only game to out GTA 5 is Minecraft and we're pretty sure the only reason for that is because Minecraft is one of the few games that's been released over the past two decades that's been ported to more platforms than GTA 5. Can you imagine how much more GTA 5 would sell if Rockstar Games worked with Nintendo to bring it to the Nintendo Switch, which was already previously teased and something that someone else has pulled off in the past?
Going back to Mazin's expectations for GTA 6's sales, it wouldn't be impossible for GTA 6 to outsell GTA 5, both at launch and over time.
By the time that GTA 6 will be released later this year, the PlayStation 5 will have likely already elapsed the PlayStation 3 in sales. As of the moment of writing, the PS5 has already sold 71 million units so far and its best quarters have yet to come. With Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei both expected to be released before GTA 6, this number will likely jump to at least 80 million by Q2 of the current fiscal year. If not, GTA 6 will surely vault it past that number.
Previously, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki alluded to the importance of GTA 6 by saying that they're expecting record sales for the PS5 this holiday season after the ninth-generation console posted its best quarter year last holiday.
Aside from Sony, others are also confident in GTA 6's to sell copies. GTA V actor Ned Luke, who portrays Michael De Santa, believes that GTA 6 will breach the billion-dollar mark on its opening day. Meanwhile, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick once proclaimed that GTA 6 will set a new creative benchmark in the entertainment industry, believing that the game will positively impact overall console sales. Finally, there's the entire video game industry bracing for the "meteoric" impact of GTA 6, with some experts comparing it to an iceberg.
With that said, the mere fact that GTA 6 was mentioned in an interview of a showrunner of a completely unrelated live-action adaptation of a video game franchise just shows how much the game is on the forefront of mainstream consciousness.
It's a wonder then why Take-Two is even bothering to allocate a huge sum to market GTA 6 when it's all everyone can talk about these days. GTA 6 is currently confirmed for a Fall 2025 release, with marketing efforts expected to ramp up in the months before its official launch.
