Grand Theft Auto 5 is maintaining its popularity in 2025, ranking as the 15th best-selling game in the US for 2024, surpassing newer titles.
It's 2025 and Grand Theft Auto 5 has yet to show signs of slowing down. The second-best-selling video game in history continues to add to its tally as it closes 2024 as the 15th-best-selling game in the United States, trumping several new titles, including Game of the Year 2024 nominee, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The list of the best-selling games from 12/23/2023 through 1/4/2025, as compiled and shared by Mat Piscatella on BlueSky, reveals that the 2013 title is one of the few games that wasn't released in 2024 to top the sales charts.
GTA 5 owes much of its success to Rockstar Games' continued support over the years. The game received multiple updates last year, particularly to its now standalone online multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online. Despite criticism that Rockstar gave up on the single-player aspect of GTA 5 in favor of focusing on more online content, including dropping planned single-player expansions that would've included a DLC specifically for Trevor Philips, the sustained relevance of the game proves that Rockstar made the right choice.
Rockstar isn't expected to slow down with its GTA 5 updates anytime soon. Even though Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch sometime later this year, Rockstar still has plans for the outgoing title. At the moment, fans can look forward to the release of Grand Theft Auto V Expanded & Enhanced on the PC. Not to mention, Rockstar continues to use GTA 5 as a way to tease GTA 6 by backporting certain stuff from its upcoming successor, giving birth to ridiculous and wild theories.
With GTA 5 expected to continue selling well this 2025, it sets a high bar for GTA 6 to clear going forward. Although industry analysts and Take-Two Interactive aren't shy of praising GTA 6, certain factors outside of anyone's control, including the upcoming tariffs on video game prices, could potentially affect its ability to sell well, especially at launch.
GTA 6 is currently in development with a confirmed Fall 2025 release window for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. A PC port, currently in development, is expected at a later date.
