TL;DR Summary

You can pre load the Kortz Center Heist now, but it says locked until the July 14 Grand Theft Auto Online update goes live.

Impatient Grand Theft Auto fans can download the next Grand Theft Auto Online update right now. The Kortz Center Heist update is now available for pre-download days ahead of its official July 14 release. Head to the updates section on your console, and it will show up as a pre-download. Grab it, and you will be ready to play the second the servers flip it on.

Again. The update isn't out yet. It's just that the files you need to play it are already available. The files you download right now will sit on your console doing nothing until Tuesday. You can still play Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online as normal in the meantime, but the heist itself stays locked until Rockstar Games says otherwise.

What's interesting is that the same update is 1.9GB on PS5 and 5.11GB on Xbox Series X and S, which is more than double. It's almost certainly down to how each platform compresses and packages update data, rather than Xbox players getting extra content. Don't expect to see extra content if you're on Xbox.

The Kortz Center is an art gallery in the Pacific Bluffs hills that has been sitting on the Los Santos map since 2013, doing absolutely nothing. Thirteen years later, Rockstar is finally letting you rob it. The heist is a multi-stage art theft in which you scope out the place, photograph the paintings, choose your approach, and escape with the loot, working with a character named Mr. Faber and his fixer, Raf De Angelis.

The twist is the forgery angle. You have to swap the paintings for replicas made by a counterfeiter working out of your Art Studio, a new upgrade to the Mansion property added in the previous update. To host the heist, you need a Mansion and to buy the new Art Studio upgrade for it. You can join someone else's heist without owning the property, and you can run it solo or with up to four players, but if you want to call the shots, you'll have to pay for the privilege first.

To at least soften the financial blow, Rockstar has thrown free money away at players before Tuesday.

What GTA Online players can claim ahead of the July 14 update, and what each requires.

The Mansion owner rewards are particularly worth clearing your Monday for, since a GTA$1,000,000 discount on the exact upgrade you need to run the heist is a real chunk off the entry fee.

Still, Grand Theft Auto VI is four months away, and Rockstar is asking you to buy a Mansion, then buy an Art Studio upgrade on top of it, to access a heist in a game that a very large portion of its player base will abandon in November. It's a serious in-game investment with a genuinely short runway to pay itself back.

If you grind heists constantly, the Kortz Center becomes another high-value, repeatable source, and you will earn it back. If you play casually, you will want to think carefully before dumping millions into property for one job you might run three times before you move on to the next Grand Theft Auto and your friends all disappear into Vice City.

There is also the elephant in the room. This is very likely the last major GTA Online content drop before GTA 6. A blockbuster heist, arriving four months before the sequel, in a game that has run for thirteen years, is a send-off if subtle. If that is what this is, then robbing a building that has sat untouched on the map since 2013 is a pretty fitting way to close it out. Rockstar finally opening the door to the one landmark everyone ignored, right at the end, is either good writing or a happy accident, and either way it works.

So download it now and be ready for Tuesday. Just remember it will not let you in early, no matter how many times you check, especially if you're on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
