So unless Rockstar decides it needs even more time, forcing Take-Two to defer (and they can, as per Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick), GTA 6 is a go for May next year. The timing of this confirmation couldn't be better.
The update came during their Q1 2026 earnings call on August 7, marking the first concrete news since Rockstar's massive content reveal back in May that included a second trailer, new photos of locations and characters.
What's particularly reassuring about this latest update is how straightforward it is. While many other games in Take-Two's portfolio are listed with vague TBD release dates, GTA 6 maintains its semi-specific launch date.
However, seasoned gamers know that Rockstar has a complicated relationship with release dates. Red Dead Redemption 2, their last major release, was originally announced for late 2017 but didn't hit shelves until October 26, 2018, after two significant delays. Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto IV were both delayed from their original release dates as well.
A better question for now is the price. This mystery remains the elephant in the room. With Nintendo and Xbox already normalizing $80 game prices, experts are speculating that GTA 6 could push the boundary even further, although some aren't quite as sold on the possibility of a sizeable price hike.
Despite these concerns, the confirmation of the May 2026 date is exactly what we all needed to hear. While nothing is ever guaranteed in game development, this latest update suggests that Rockstar and Take-Two are confident in their timeline.
