Take-Two Interactive is preparing for a busy fall season, with Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 releasing in August and September, respectively.
Take-Two Interactive has a busy fall season ahead, with at least three AAA titles scheduled for release a little over a month from each other. After confirming the release date of Borderlands 4 earlier this year, Take-Two has also revealed when we can expect Mafia: The Old Country to hit both digital and physical storeshelves. Plus, you know, that third one. Minor detail.
According to the game's official game hub on Steam, Mafia: The Could Country is set for an August 8 release, roughly six weeks ahead of Borderlands 4, which launches on September 25. What does this have to do with Grand Theft Auto 6? A lot, actually. Take-Two has dedicated a huge chunk of money for its marketing spend for this fiscal year and the aforementioned three titles are to blame.
GTA 6 is obviously the biggest of the three. However, Take-Two likely doesn't want to take away the spotlight from its two other blockbuster titles, which brings us to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's earlier statement. The cheeky gaming executive has previously mentioned that they're taking a different route with GTA 6, preferring to market it much closer to its release date.
With Mafia: The Old Country confirmed for PAX East on May 8, we can only assume this means that Take-Two won't start actively marketing the sixthquel until after it's finished giving out the proverbial fliers for the Hangar 13 prequel. Then, right around Mafia: The Old Country comes out, Take-Two has to make room for Borderlands 4, leaving most of the marketing for GTA 6 until September or October.
You can take this as either good news or bad news. It's good because it means that we have a clue of when to expect more concrete information about GTA 6 to come out (and it's coming out in time for the holiday season). It's bad because September is still at least five months away and we likely won't hear much about the game in May when Take-Two holds its next earnings call.
Then again, given that Rockstar Games has starved us of GTA 6 news for 17 months now, what's five more months, right? In the meantime, the rest of the industry can't stop talking about the "huge meteor" and/or "iceberg" that is GTA 6. The latest word is that analysts are propping the game up as the savior of the video game industry.
