Much of the gaming industry is pinning its hopes on Grand Theft Auto 6 and the Switch 2 to recover.
$92.7 billion. That's a really big number - studies show people have a hard time picturing numbers this big. This is the total revenue expected from PC and console softwares by 2027 and its chief driver? Grand Theft Auto 6. This is according to Emmanual Rosier, director of market analysis at Newzoo, in the analytic firm's latest PC & Console Gaming Report.
Newzoo's analysis suggests that GTA 6, alongside the launch of Nintendo's next-generation Switch console, the nonchalantly named Switch 2 (because, why not?), will drive overall console market revenue to a staggering $92.7 billion by 2027. This marks a significant leap from the $80.2 billion recorded in 2024, mirroring statements previously made by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick and Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki.
It's been brutal for the gaming industry for the past two years (or it seems that way after the pandemic bull market, at least). It has and continues to weather a period of economic uncertainty, reduced consumer spending, and widespread layoffs. It's currently being subjected to the potential impact of the United States' tariffs on video game software and hardware prices.
The release of GTA 6 later this year, which itself is still up for speculation, comes as a potentially permanent reprieve from all this downturn. For years, Rockstar Games' upcoming title has been propped up as gaming's next big thing. Many words have been used to describe the sixthquel, from a game that will "set a new creative benchmark" to an "iceberg" and a "huge meteor". Now, Newzoo's report is basically calling it as the gaming industry's saviour.
With GTA 6 poised to make billions in its launch week, driving hardware sales for both the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5 up for the foreseeable future, it isn't so crazy to think that this single release will turn the tables for the entire gaming industry. Besides, there's enough precedent to suggest that GTA 6 will not only live up to the expectations, but exceed them.
Grand Theft Auto V, had a similarly profound impact in its release back in 2013 and it continues to make its presence felt a decade later. To date, GTA 5 remains one of the most downloaded games on the PlayStation and it has sold well over 210 million copies globally, good for second place on the all-time charts. With its impending launch on the Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on April 15, GTA 5 could very well top the charts on the Xbox and the PC soon.
Between this and Take-Two's intensified marketing campaign starting anytime soon (we're hoping to get more GTA 6 news in May at the company's next earnings call, but Zelnick's recent statement suggests we'll get nothing more than a "yes, it's still coming this fall"), don't be surprised if everyone ever talks about for the next couple of months is GTA 6.
