Grand Theft Auto fans always had a reputation for unprecedented feats of online sleuthing, uncovering secrets and hidden details in Rockstar Games' titles, which the studio has been more than happy to indulge. Now, one fan has taken things to an entirely new level with a Grand Theft Auto 6 theory that far exceeds the infamous Moon Theory from two years back.
In a forum post that reads more like a university thesis, JohnCGaming, a user who obviously has more time on their hands than most of us, dove headfirst into American military history, tracing the evolution of elite infantry units from colonial times to modern conflicts in the Middle East. To be fair, this caliber of research isn't unheard of in this fandom.
Why did they collect all this information? Because the user believes that the tattoo on Jason Duval's left shoulder shown in the second GTA 6 trailer is a direct reference to Merrill's Marauders, a legendary World War 2 unit officially known as the 5307th Composite Unit, which operated deep in the jungles of Burma and India, using guerrilla tactics to disrupt Japanese forces.
JohnCGaming explains that the legacy of Merrill's Marauders was eventually incorporated into the modern 75th Ranger Regiment, one of the most elite light infantry units in the United States Army. The theory suggests that Jason may have served in this very regiment - and that isn't the only piece of evidence gleaned from what limited footage we have, either.
If Jason truly served with the Rangers, he would have real combat experience under the most intense conditions in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. While Trevor Philips from Grand Theft Auto 5 was violently unpredictable and Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto 4 had militia experience in the Yugoslav Wars, Jason's training would put him on an entirely different level. Jason's shooting stance in the screenshots we've seen so far, specifically his open-eyed shooting technique, is something specifically taught to military personnel.
For now, Jason's true background remains officially unconfirmed - but thanks to one dedicated fan's impressive research, we have a compelling theory that gives us plenty of food for thought ahead of the game's release on November 19, 2026.
GTA 6 recently won a pair of awards at this year's Golden Joysticks, and it's expected to win its next trophy at The Game Awards on December 11.
