The closeness of the vote shows that the entire video game industry doesn't necessarily only revolve around GTA, contrary to what others are saying.

The Golden Joysticks are one of the few award shows that rely entirely on public voting. That format gives a clearer sense of how broad gaming audiences feel rather than a panel of critics or developers. Thus, viewed from this perspective, the narrow victory feels more meaningful. Like GTA, The Witcher is one of the strongest franchises in gaming, and it's been a long wait since the last entry - incidentally, also a successful and much beloved record breaker with plenty of awards to its name.

The event also acted as a preview of the larger awards season since The Game Awards nominations were announced earlier in the week. GTA 6 is expected to repeat its success there since it is once again nominated for the "Most Anticipated Game" award. With The Witcher 4 also just as highly anticipated, GTA 6's chances of setting a new record and winning the same award across multiple consecutive years might not be a given if it is still delayed to 2027.

So, while GTA 6 remains the most discussed video game of today, it doesn't dominate conversations by default. Other upcoming AAA titles can challenge the upcoming sequel with little to no marketing behind them. At the very least, this should keep Rockstar on their toes as they pursue perfection above all costs.
