Grand Theft Auto VI is officially in the running for The Game Awards 2026. The game awards show has already confirmed its eligibility cutoff and it says that any game made commercially available on or before November 20 at 9 p.m. PT qualifies for this year's ceremony. GTA 6 launches on November 19, which means that it makes the deadline by a single day.
The confirmation settles a question we raised earlier. The Game Awards FAQ now states plainly that games must ship on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, with a later November 30 deadline for the fan-voted Players' Voice category. There is no special carve-out for Rockstar Games. The date follows the show's usual pattern of a cutoff around the third Friday of November, which is where November 20 sits this year. Last year the line was November 21. GTA 6 did not get an exception. Its November 19 release falls inside the window by a day.
We make a point of this because we had our doubts. When we looked at GTA 6's awards odds earlier, we called its eligibility borderline and tied to an unverified November cutoff. This settles it, giving it a real and official cutoff.
Eligible is not the same as favored though. Making the ballot and winning it are two different things. Game of the Year nominations are typically voted by a jury in early to mid November, before GTA 6 reaches most players. A juror who has not finished the game, or started it, may be slow to hand it the top prize. The new cutoff does nothing to change the point we made earlier. Eligibility gets GTA 6 into the room. It does not fill in ballots.

This is where the review-copy talks come in. Insider NateTheHate said around October 14 that review copies should go out before the end of October, which would give critics weeks with the game before launch. Insider Gaming separately reported a pre-launch review embargo, with the exact date held back because it could still move. Some of that reporting is no longer available and none of it is confirmed by Rockstar. Oddly enough, this isn't the first time this has happened. Back in May, word was that Rockstar might not send review codes at all, favoring supervised on-site sessions over mailed copies and in August, Insider Gaming was one of the outlets who walked back on their earlier reports.
If the early-access reports hold up, the whole doubt about GTA 6 missing nominations because of jurors not having played it in time becomes a non-issue. The Game Awards even allows for it, with the FAQ letting publishers provide pre-release copies for critical evaluation so games can meet the balloting deadlines.
Rockstar at Spike and The Game Awards
Title | Show | Result |
|---|---|---|
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | Spike VGA 2003 | Best Performance by a Human (Ray Liotta), nominated for Game of the Year |
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Spike VGA 2004 | Game of the Year, Best Action Game, Best Soundtrack, Best Performance (Samuel L. Jackson) |
Grand Theft Auto IV | Spike VGA 2008 | Game of the Year, Best Action Adventure, Best Performance by a Human Male (Michael Hollick) |
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars | Spike VGA 2009 | Best Handheld Game |
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony | Spike VGA 2009 | Best DLC |
Grand Theft Auto V | Spike VGX 2013 | Game of the Year, Best Soundtrack |
Red Dead Redemption 2 | The Game Awards 2018 | Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Score/Music, Best Performance (Roger Clark), lost Game of the Year to God of War |
GTA 6 | The Game Awards 2024 and 2025 | Most Anticipated Game, no other wins yet |
Grand Theft Auto won Game of the Year three times in the fan-voted Spike era but none in the jury-voted Game Awards era.
Then there are the public's expectations of a potential "sweep." Rockstar's own Game Awards history says otherwise. The studio's best night at the show came in 2018, when Red Dead Redemption 2 won four awards, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Score/Music and Best Performance for Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan. It still lost Game of the Year to God of War. GTA 6 has already won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards two years running, in 2024 and 2025. However, no mainline Grand Theft Auto has won The Game Awards' Game of the Year in the modern era, which began in 2014, but Grand Theft Auto V took the top prize at the last Spike VGX in 2013, the show that preceded it and older GTA titles took home the same trophy, among other accolades.
With that said, reviewers getting weeks of early time would help its nomination case, but that is not confirmed yet. A clean sweep would make history since no mainline GTA has managed to do it at The Game Awards. We will know for sure when the shortlist drops in November, with the ceremony to follow in December. For now, the only sure thing is that GTA 6 made the deadline, with a day to spare.
