The biggest game of the decade is going to miss most of Game of the Year season because of its third and final release date. Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, and that date is too late for nearly every major awards show's cycle this year. The most anticipated release in years cannot win Game of the Year this year, which is a shame except that this is Grand Theft Auto game that we're talking about and history says that it probably wouldn't sweep the awards anyway nor does it matter at all for the game's legacy.
Now, first things first, the "why?". The problem with Lucia and Jason making their debut in Vice City is not quality. Rather, it's timing. Gaming's big five GOTY awards each have their own eligibility window and GTA 6 lands on the wrong side of most of them. It is already locked out of the Golden Joysticks, set to crown their winner on November 11, eight days before anyone can even buy the game, killing any chance of the clean sweep only two games in history have ever pulled off.
Qualifying for The Game Awards isn't a sure bet either. Geoff Keighley set the 2026 ceremony for December 10 and the show has historically used a cutoff around the third Friday of November. If that lands on November 20, GTA 6 qualifies by a single day. If it lands earlier, the game misses its own release year at the biggest awards night in gaming. Even a technical yes comes with a catch. Nominations voting usually happens in early or mid-November. If jurors have not played the game by then and Rockstar is probably fine not flying them over to experience the game in a controlled environment, it could miss nominations even while being eligible on paper.
The other three are the easy part. The D.I.C.E. Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards and the BAFTA Games Awards all run on calendar-year or window-based eligibility that comfortably includes November 19. GTA 6 qualifies for all three. However, their ceremonies fall in early 2027. So the game will compete for major awards, just not this year.
Where GTA 6 stands with gaming's big five awards
Award | Ceremony | GTA 6 eligible? |
|---|---|---|
Golden Joystick Awards | November 11, 2026 | No, the game is not out yet |
The Game Awards | December 10, 2026 | Borderline, by a day if the cutoff allows |
D.I.C.E. Awards | February 2027 | Yes, for the 2027 ceremony |
Game Developers Choice | March 2027 | Yes, for the 2027 ceremony |
BAFTA Games Awards | April 2027 | Yes, its window includes November 19 |
How GTA 6's launch date lines up against the five biggest game awards.
With that said, even when a GTA game arrives on time and plays the full awards cycle, it does not sweep. History is clear on this. Grand Theft Auto V came out in September 2013 with a whole season ahead of it, cleaned up the public-voted shows and took real craft awards, then lost the pure Game of the Year prizes at the peer-voted ceremonies to The Last of Us. Grand Theft Auto IV won the Spike VGAs but got shut out of the industry-voted awards entirely. Red Dead Redemption 2 wasn't safe either.
Despite the critical acclaim the 2018 title received, GTA's western cousin frequently ranked among the best games of its year and of the 2010s but it lost to God of War and Fortnite at The Game Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards, respectively.
So, yeah, even before all this, GTA 6 was never going to join Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the third game to sweep all five of the big GOTY awards in a single season. This means that the most commercially dominant release in video game history is barred from the one clean-sweep record that would match its hype, on a technicality of the calendar and because, for some reason, Rockstar's titles that go on to define a generation never has become awards night darlings.
How GTA's last two games actually did at the major awards
Game | Public and commercial awards | Peer-voted GOTY |
|---|---|---|
GTA V (2013) | Won Golden Joysticks GOTY and Spike VGX GOTY, plus craft wins at D.I.C.E., GDCA and BAFTA | Lost GOTY to The Last of Us at D.I.C.E. and the GDCAs |
GTA IV (2008) | Won Spike VGA GOTY and Golden Joystick Xbox GOTY | Shut out at D.I.C.E., GDCA and BAFTA |
GTA wins the fan and craft awards, then loses GOTY to smaller, story-driven games.

Simply put, GTA is the commercial juggernaut everyone plays and that's not always the same as the critical darling the developer academies crown.
There is an irony in it. Rockstar delayed GTA 6 twice for polish, pushing it to a November 19 date picked for the game. The same date now costs it a shot at a sweep it might not have completed anyway. Rockstar almost certainly does not care. A game on track for the biggest launch ever measures success in copies sold, and the impact it has already made, continues to make and will still make, for years to come. It does not need a trophy shelf to prove anything nor does it need to prove anything at all.
The awards will sort themselves out without Rockstar lifting a finger. There is a one-day knife-edge at The Game Awards in December over whether the game even makes the ballot and a fuller run at D.I.C.E., the GDCAs and BAFTA in 2027. None of it changes what GTA 6 is. GTA V never won the top peer prize in 2013 and still sold past 230 million copies and stayed a fixture for over a decade. GTA 6 is built to do the same and then some.
People will play GTA 6, stream it, and argue about it long after this year's winners are boxed up and forgotten, trophy or no trophy.
