Stephen Root Just Became the First Actor to Confirm His GTA 6 Role

Stephen Root just did something almost no Grand Theft Auto actor ever does, which is confirm his role in Grand Theft Auto VI.

In an interview tied to his Emmy nomination for the Apple TV+ series Widow's Bay, the veteran character actor said he voices a character named Brian Heder in the game.

If the name does not ring a bell, the voice probably will. Root is one of those actors who turns up in everything, Milton in Office Space, Fuches in Barry, decades of film and TV besides. Fans had already pegged him months ago by matching his voice to the trailers and the Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look.

Brian Heder, going by the game's own press coverage, is a drug-runner and mentor figure connected to Jason, one of the game's two protagonists.

Rockstar Games keeps its casts sealed until launch as a rule. Sometimes, their roles are almost always never official confirm. It does not put out cast lists, and its actors almost never break the silence early, which is what makes Root the first star to officially confirm a GTA 6 role. He did it casually, during awards-season press, turning long-running fan speculation into fact.

The studio has said nothing official about who plays Jason, Lucia or anyone else, which is why fans spend months reverse-engineering the cast from voice matches in the first place.

For now, Brian Heder is the one confirmed role from inside the game, and the rest of the cast will almost certainly stay secret until the game comes out in November, the way Rockstar always plays it. Root simply decided not to wait.
