Obbe Vermeij

Obbe Vermeij is a former technical director at Rockstar North whose credits include several Grand Theft Auto games from the 3D and early HD eras.

Vermeij is credited as technical director on Grand Theft Auto III¹ and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.²

Adam Fowler and Obbe Vermeij were technical directors on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.³

Adam Fowler, Alexander Roger and Obbe Vermeij were technical directors on Grand Theft Auto IV.⁴

His technical-director credits do not establish responsibility for particular systems, design decisions or other Rockstar projects.

Development commentary

Vermeij recalled that Leslie Benzies and Aaron Garbut began work on GTA III before New York approved the project. After finishing Space Station Silicon Valley, developers at the studio had been making small prototypes; Vermeij worked on sailing and ball-rolling games before the rest of the team joined GTA III.

In November 2023, Vermeij published a personal blog about development inside Rockstar North. He later removed its development posts, explaining on the remaining page that the decision was his own after learning that some former colleagues did not enjoy them.⁵
