TL;DR Summary

Grand Theft Auto 6 is not coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Rockstar Games confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as the only platforms for its release date on November 19, with pre-orders opening on June 25.

A post from the X account @DiscussingFish, a self-described satire page, went viral by mashing up the official Grand Theft Auto VI cover art of Jason and Lucia with fake Nintendo branding, presenting it as if GTA 6 were coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. It cited a real IGN pre-order article to make the joke land. A lot of people did not catch that it was a joke.

Again. We want to make it clear that GTA 6 is not coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. Rockstar Games has already confirmed the platforms and they're PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That's all.

Still, the joke is funny because people are gullible enough to believe it, and the console is powerful enough to actually make the conversation worth talking about. However, we have to remember that GTA 6 is the most technically demanding game Rockstar has ever built, running on the RAGE 9 engine with a massive, detailed open world. The mental image of that game crammed onto Nintendo's hardware, running at a slideshow frame rate or crashing constantly, is the joke.

GTA 6 is a current-gen console game first, a PC game eventually, and a Nintendo game very nearly certainly never in this generation.

That said, the "never" deserves a small asterisk, because the satire is built on a kernel of plausibility. Nintendo and Rockstar do have a history. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars launched on the Nintendo DS in 2009. Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have appeared on various Nintendo platforms over the years as ports of older games. The Switch 2 is significantly more powerful than the original Switch and Take-Two Interactive isn't above bringing its catalog to other platforms, eventually.

So could a heavily optimized GTA 6 port reach Switch 2 years down the line, the way Grand Theft Auto V eventually reached platforms it was never originally built for? It is not impossible.

Cloud streaming versions exist as another theoretical path. But "a possible optimized port or cloud version several years after launch" is a very different statement from "GTA 6 is coming to Switch 2," which is what the satire post implied.

With that said, when it comes to GTA 6 information, always check the source. @DiscussingFish is a satire account. The real platform information comes from Rockstar's own announcement. If a GTA 6 claim is not on Rockstar's Newswire or its official channels, treat it as unconfirmed until it is, whether it is a delay rumor, a leaked gameplay video, or a Nintendo Switch 2 box with Lucia on the cover.

GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-orders open next week on June 25. The PC port comes later. Switch 2 owners who want to play on day one have the same options as everyone else: buy a PS5, buy an Xbox, or wait. The satire was good. The port is not real. At least not this year.
