TL;DR Summary

A complete Grand Theft Auto 6 setup costs roughly $840 to start and that's without a PC version available at launch.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026. Pre-orders are expected in the coming weeks. However, the game itself is only one line item in the total cost of playing. Most will also need a console, a display capable of handling what RAGE 9 delivers, enough storage to fit a rumored 150-200 GB install, and an internet connection stable enough for whatever comes next after Grand Theft Auto Online.

So far, Rockstar Games has not confirmed performance specs, resolution targets, frame rate modes, or install size. All recommendations in this guide to cover what you need, what you do not need, and what it all costs are based on general next-gen requirements, RAGE engine expectations from Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced, and educated estimates.

Storage is the problem most players have not thought about and usually don't think about.

We recommend that you buy an SSD expansion now while prices are relatively low. It could go lower still, but it could spike as SSD demand rises closer to November, as millions of players have the same realization you are having right now.

For best results, GTA 6 must be installed on the internal SSD or an approved high-speed expansion drive. External USB hard drives cannot run PS5 or Xbox Series games directly.

Even if the prices don't increase, they may be out of stock.

As for your controller, the standard DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controller that come with your console out of the box are fully capable of playing the next Grand Theft Auto. However, you'd be best off getting the best experience with Sony's flagship console. Rockstar used DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in GTA V: Expanded and Enhanced and will almost certainly expand them for GTA 6. You will feel the tension of a gun trigger, the resistance of a car brake, and the texture of road surfaces through the controller you already own.

Finally, internet requirements depend on how you play.

Keep in mind that these are approximate US retail prices as of the time of writing. Upcoming sales and deals may further reduce TV and console prices (don't count on it), but at the same time, the increased demand could also drive prices up, as we've already mentioned.

Buying your setup now over the summer lets you lock in what you need to enjoy GTA 6 at its current pricing without fear of being priced out or, worse still, facing a stock shortage.

The smartest move here is to figure out what you already own. Check your TV's specs. Is it 4K? HDR? 120Hz? Also, if you already own a PlayStation 5, check the available storage, and don't forget to run a speed test to see if your internet speeds are up to the task.

Identify the gaps and fill them over the summer while prices are stable.

Remember, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has made it pretty clear that GTA 6 will launch in five months. November will be too late for everything except regret. Start now.
