GTA fans can't stop playing and buying GTA 5 over a decade since it first came out.

Just when everyone thought that Rockstar Games' best-selling title, Grand Theft Auto V, will finally start becoming less popular, it proves everyone wrong by topping the PlayStation sales charts once again.

The shadow drop of the second Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer immediately led to GTA V becoming one of the most-played and downloaded games on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

According to the console manufacturer's monthly game charts, GTA 5 was the 5th and 4th most downloaded game on the PS5 in United States and Canada, respectively. Meanwhile, the PS4 charts tell a similar story, as it jumped to the 5th spot in North America and the 6th spot in Europe.

The sales figures are particularly noteworthy considering May saw the release of titles such as Forza Horizon 5, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Elden Ring Nightreign.

Released in 2013, GTA V is the second-most bought game in video game history, trailing only Minecraft.

With over 215 million units sold across three console generations, the success of GTA V and Grand Theft Auto Online are partly the reason why Rockstar canceled DLCs for the award-winning open world title.

Although some have called GTA 5's success as the reason why Rockstar has no incentive to speed up the development on GTA 6, another way of framing it is that it allows the studio to take its time making a worthy successor.

True enough, Rockstar didn't hesitate to delay GTA 6 by over a year even though the decision carries serious financial consequences for the entire video game industry, causing Take-Two Interactive stock prices to drop almost immediately after setting a record high earlier this year.

With the full brunt of the entire Rockstar Games studio lineup behind it, GTA 6 is expected to be a commercial and critical success.

Until it comes out on May 26, 2026, Grand Theft Auto fans will have to make do with GTA V and GTA Online, which, according to reports, is due for a summer update soon.
