Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is currently the best-selling PS5 game with over 11 million units sold - but if you ask Sony, the official title holder has yet to even be released. It doesn't take an expert to know that they're probably referring to Grand Theft Auto 6. In a recent BBC News interview largely focused on dismissing any immediate PS6 plans, PlayStation's senior vice president of marketing, sales, and business operations Eric Lempel shed light on what to expect from the PS5 going forward.
According to Lempel, despite the PS5 already hosting several multi-million-selling titles over its five-year lifespan, the console's best-selling game hasn't even hit store shelves yet. Not a lot of competitors are realistically floating around - at least as far as ones we know about go - so naturally the fandom in its characteristic furor jumped to the conclusion that this is alluding to GTA 6.
The aforementioned PlayStation-exclusive title is a follow-up to Marvel's Spider-Man, which itself became the best-selling PS4 exclusive. However, Grand Theft Auto V is the best-selling PlayStation game of all time in the United States, a fact that obviously isn't lost on Lempel (or pretty much any other Sony executive) including former SIE Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, who once said that GTA 6 will probably end up selling for more than $70.
GTA V aside, the Grand Theft Auto series has a storied history of dominating PlayStation sales charts. The PS2 era saw three GTA titles that initially launched as PlayStation exclusives - which happened only because Microsoft passed on Grand Theft Auto III- all landed in the console's top five best-sellers of all time. While multiplatform releases are now obviously the norm, the franchise's gravitational pull on PlayStation remains just as strong. So, unless anyone can name another series or title that has outsold GTA on a PlayStation platform, it's quite obvious what title Lempel is talking about here.
