Festive Surprise brings snow, gifts and Christmas chaos to Grand Theft Auto Online. The name began with 2014’s mix of new weapons, vehicles and holiday clothing, then returned for celebrations with different rewards and activities.1

Some additions stayed in the game, while gifts and snowy weather had shorter lives. In 2018, for example, the Vapid Clique arrived on Christmas Day with a free claim window that lasted just that day.4

What the name means

GTA Online's Christmas celebrations predate the Festive Surprise name. The 2015 campaign brought back clothing from both the 2014 Festive Surprise and the original 2013 Holiday Gifts. Snow, decorated properties and holiday outfits connected those celebrations, but the contents were not identical.2

The name also outlasted the early DLC releases. In December 2022, Festive Surprise included Snowmen collectibles, The Gooch and a shootout at Weazel Plaza. Those activities were not part of the original 2014 package.5

2014: weapons, vehicles and temporary holiday clothing

The December 2014 Festive Surprise added the Homing Missile Launcher and Proximity Mines to Ammu-Nation. It also introduced four vehicles, including race versions of the Massacro and Jester. Snow was planned for selected days, while the free holiday clothing and special crate drops had a January 5 deadline. The original campaign supported PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.1

2015: returning outfits and additions during the holidays

Festive Surprise 2015 added new holiday clothing for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with festive attire from previous years returning during the holiday period. The celebration ran through January 5, 2016, and further gifts and Adversary Mode additions were planned during the event.2

The Tampa joined the vehicle lineup during the celebration, while snowfall gave players a chance to collect and throw snowballs. Beast vs. Slasher set a team of superhuman Beasts against armed Slashers. The celebration continued to grow after its opening day.

2016: a holiday celebration alongside Import/Export

The 2016 celebration brought back festive clothing and added new holiday items. It coincided with the Truffade Nero's arrival at Benny's Original Motor Works. The Nero and further vehicle releases belonged to the Import/Export rollout, even though their announcements appeared during the festive period.3

2018: daily gifts and Arena War additions

The 2018 festivities overlapped with Arena War. Festive content was enabled on December 18, and Christmas Day brought Bomb Ball and the Vapid Clique. The Clique was free on December 25; that gift window was separate from the vehicle's addition to the game. The Itali GTO arrived for sale on December 26.4

Snow and Snowballs were disabled on January 3, 2019, while festive content was disabled on January 8. Even within this one campaign, the snow and the broader holiday content did not end together.4

2022: Snowmen, The Gooch and Weazel Plaza

The December 22, 2022 celebration introduced 25 destructible Snowmen around Southern San Andreas. Destroying all of them earned an extra GTA$125,000 and the Snowman Outfit. The Gooch was a roaming attacker whose encounter rewarded a mask, while the Weazel Plaza shootout offered a weapon and a festive Pistol Mk II skin. Candy Cane gifts and other holiday rewards also featured in that week's event.5

The 25 Snowmen locations stretch across Los Santos and Blaine County. The hunt gives you a reason to explore both the city and the countryside during the holidays.

2023: the Happy Holidays Hauler and Yeti Hunt

The 2023 celebration sent the Happy Holidays Hauler around Southern San Andreas, dropping presents that included festive sweaters, GTA$, RP, ammo and snacks. A Yeti hunt, snowball fights and a holiday version of Entourage added more to do in the snow. Returning events also gave players another chance to earn the Snowman Outfit and Gooch Mask.6

The Snowball Launcher was another new arrival. Players could claim it by logging in from December 21 to 27, 2023, turning the familiar snowball fight into a much less subtle exchange.6

2024 and 2025: returning encounters and new gifts

The Gooch, Weazel Plaza Shootout and Yeti Hunt returned for Christmas 2024, bringing their rewards back with them. Snow and decorations accompanied new seasonal weapon finishes, a holiday onesie and other gifts. The year's new police vehicles arrived alongside those festivities, rather than replacing the returning holiday events.7

By 2025, the decorations had reached the new mansion properties from A Safehouse in the Hills. That year's gifts mixed the new Season’s Greetings Sweater and New Year Fireworks Bodysuit with returning items such as the Snowball Launcher and Candy Cane. The claim window ran from December 23, 2025 to January 7, 2026; snowfall was forecast separately for later in December.8

Snow, gifts and lasting additions

Snow, decorations and festive clothing give each celebration its Christmas atmosphere. Alongside them, Rockstar mixes short-lived offers with vehicles, weapons and modes that become part of the wider game.

The dates have not always lined up. In 2018, snow ended before the broader festive content was switched off. In 2025, the gift window began several days after the decorations went up and continued into January.48
