The Gooch outfit is considered one of the rarest outfits in GTA Online due to the specific conditions required for the event to trigger. While the spawn can feel inconsistent in public sessions, the method below provides a controlled and reliable way to obtain the outfit.
Requirements Before the Gooch Can Spawn
There are a few conditions that must be met before the Gooch event is able to trigger and they are as follows:
1. Session Time Requirement
The session must have been running for at least 48 minutes in real time. This timer applies to the lobby itself, not to how long you personally have been in it. This explains why some players report being attacked shortly after joining a session, as the lobby may have already been active before they entered.
2. Minimum Player Count
The session must contain at least two players. Another important thing to note is that the Gooch targets a random player in the lobby, meaning larger public sessions significantly reduce the chance of being selected. Fewer players increases your chances of getting attacked by the Gooch, and we will use this to our advantage.
3. Cash and Snacks Requirement
You must have at least $10,000 in cash on hand, not deposited in the bank. The money must be physically carried by your character. A full snack inventory is also required.
The Gooch steals both snacks and cash when attacking, so carrying more than the minimum amount is recommended. In testing, having over $100,000 in cash allowed the event to trigger correctly.
Best Session Setup
The most consistent setup to spawn the Gooch uses an invite-only session. For this, do the following:
- Start an invite-only session
- Invite one friend into the lobby
- Allow the session to run uninterrupted for at least 48 real-time minutes
Both players must remain in Free Roam. Do not remain inside properties while waiting after the 48 minutes mark as the Gooch won't attack players in areas inaccessible to him and that includes properties and mission instances.
How to Force the Gooch to Target You
To ensure the Gooch attacks you instead of your friend, your friend should do the following:
- Consume all snacks so they have none remaining.
- Deposit all money into the bank so they are carrying no cash.
This makes you the only valid target once the event is eligible to trigger.
Important Timing Note
It is important that you do not start any mission while in a session. Mission activity can interfere with the Free Roam timer. Completing missions or entering separate mission instances can pause the session's Free Roam timer progression, extending the wait time beyond 48 minutes. For best results, remain in Free Roam and avoid launching missions while waiting.
Also, a strong indicator that the timer has passed is the completion of a full in-game day. This can be identified when daily business expenses are deducted. The Gooch can spawn immediately after this point, though it may also occur slightly earlier.
What to Do When the Gooch Attacks
When the Gooch spawns, it will knock you to the ground and attempt to flee. You will briefly be incapacitated for a few seconds. As soon as you regain control of your character, use a strong ranged weapon to eliminate the Gooch.
You can also ask your friend to stun or block the Gooch until you recover because the Gooch can flee really fast.
Gooch Event Rewards
After being killed, the Gooch drops a gift box. Collecting the dropped gift box for the first time rewards players with the following:
- $35,000 in cash
- The Gooch Outfit
The outfit is unlocked permanently upon collection.
Event Availability Window
The Gooch event is time limited. You only have until December 29 to obtain the Gooch outfit. After that date, the event is will end, and the outfit may not become available again until the next year.
