Start clearing your drive now. Grand Theft Auto VI is reportedly a 210 GB download on PlayStation 5, which would make it one of the biggest console games ever to install and roughly double the size of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The figure comes from PlayStationSize, an X account that pulls download sizes from the PlayStation Store backend, posted on October 27. It covers the Standard edition on PS5 and while this is not an official Rockstar Games confirmation, their figures are almost always accurate. The only way this figure will change significantly is by way of compression, a day-one patch or if you're playing on a different platform.
With that said, the figure also lines up with an earlier leak that pegged the game's development build at around 200 GB. Xbox Series X and S sizes are not out yet, though they are expected to be in the same range, possibly a touch higher on Series X. Pre-load is listed for November 12 ahead of the midnight launch on November 19 so we should have more information by then.
Either way, the jump is staggering. At 210 GB, GTA 6 is more than double the roughly 99 GB that Red Dead Redemption 2 needed on PlayStation 4, about two and a half times the 87 GB of the current-gen Grand Theft Auto V and close to five times the 42 GB that the last-gen version shipped at in 2014. No mainline Grand Theft Auto has ever asked for anything like it.
How GTA 6's size compares to past Rockstar launches
Game, platform and year | Approximate launch size |
|---|---|
Grand Theft Auto III, PS2, 2001 | about 1.5 GB on disc |
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, PS2, 2002 | about 2.4 GB on disc |
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, PS2, 2004 | about 3.2 to 4.7 GB on disc |
Grand Theft Auto IV, PS3 and Xbox 360, 2008 | about 6.5 to 8 GB |
Red Dead Redemption, PS3 and Xbox 360, 2010 | disc-based, about 9 to 12 GB on later ports |
Grand Theft Auto V, PS3 and Xbox 360, 2013 | about 8 GB install |
Grand Theft Auto V, PS4 and Xbox One, 2014 | about 42 to 45 GB |
Red Dead Redemption 2, 2018 | about 99 to 107 GB |
Grand Theft Auto V, PS5 and Xbox Series, 2022 | about 87 GB |
Grand Theft Auto VI, PS5, 2026 | 210 GB, reported |
GTA 6 would roughly double Red Dead Redemption 2 and dwarf every earlier Rockstar open world.
The game's size and scale is likely to blame for the gargantuan file size. Vice City alone is said to be noticeably bigger than GTA V's Los Santos, with the whole state of Leonida around it packed with higher-fidelity assets and current-gen detail. The old limits are gone too. Those early GTA games were capped by DVD and Blu-ray, so their disc sizes are not a clean comparison, but digital distribution and fast SSDs now let Rockstar ship a package that a disc or an early hard drive never could have held.
So, plan your storage accordingly. A 210 GB download is only part of the story. On PS5 the game has to sit on the internal drive or an installed NVMe expansion. If your console is near full, now is the time to clear room or add a drive. Our pre-load guide walks through the size, speed and storage prep before November 12.
GTA 6 is going to take a serious bite out of your storage. Pre-load opens on November 12 and GTA 6 launches on November 19, so there is still time to make room.
