Take-Two Interactive, the company about to launch the biggest game in years, just told investors its next few months will bring in less money than the same stretch last year. It guided its upcoming quarter to between $1.62 and $1.67 billion, down from the $1.96 billion it pulled a year earlier, right before Grand Theft Auto VI, and in the same call where it doubled down on its earlier projections.

At first glance, this seems backward. Why are the owners of Rockstar Games doing this before the biggest Grand Theft Auto to launch in years?

The answer is simple, and to see it, all you need to do is to step back and look at the calendar.

GTA 6 launches on November 19 and Take-Two runs its financial year in quarters. November just so happens to fall into the quarter that runs from October to December, which means the quarter Take-Two just gave guidance for is from July to September, ending weeks before the game is out. So, of course, we can expect some quiet before the storm, the last stretch before the flood, measured while the digital codes are still in the box, unsold and unloaded.

If anything, the fact that Take-Two is only expecting such a slight dip without counting the hundreds of millions it must have already generated from GTA 6 pre-orders alone speaks volumes about the strength of the existing line-up.

How Take-Two's quarters line up around the Grand Theft Auto VI launch. Figures are net bookings.

So what is holding things up in the meantime, if GTA 6 is not there yet to carry the financial load? The big one here is NBA 2K27, the next entry in Take-Two's basketball series, out September 4. Take-Two's basketball games are a reliable annual money-maker, currently up around 7% with over 12 million units this year, so a fresh one arriving is well-timed to bridge the gap. Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto Online keeps generating steady income the way it has for over a decade, with Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and older GTA titles still paying the bills while the next one waits in the wings.

To be fair, Take-Two's latest earnings call wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. Take-Two's mobile business had a down quarter, off about 7 percent, and the company expects mobile to dip even further. Even then, the reason is simply because the current line-up isn't as strong. Last year, Take-Two's mobile arm had a breakout hit in a game called Color Block Jam, which sold enormously well and inflated the numbers. Take-Two's other mobile games are holding up. It is just hard to look good next to a fluke hit.

So does any of this dent the big picture? Not really. None of it changes the full-year forecast. Take-Two reiterated its outlook for the whole year at $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings, betting huge on one a game. A company quietly worried about a weak year does not keep an aggressive full-year number while guiding one interim quarter down. The fact that it held the annual figure steady while accepting a quiet Q2 tells you the quiet quarter was always in the plan.

Take-Two knows the quarter before a November launch is slow, built its year around that, and is still promising a record.

If it isn't already obvious by now, it's true that a single game landing in one quarter is currently carrying an entire company's growth story for the year and perhaps for the foreseeable future. It's a lot to put on a single release and date. The only reason why there isn't any hint of panic is because everyone is confident about what comes next after what GTA V showed the world. The rest of the video game industry is still at the mercy of GTA, Rockstar, and Take-Two, with Nintendo the only one of the big three brave enough to offer an alternative to a trip to Vice City and Leonida.

Ultimately, the key takeaway here is that Take-Two is coasting through a deliberately quiet stretch, leaning on basketball and an ageing online mode to hold the line, while the thing its entire year is built on sits a few weeks away.

The next real milestone is the Netflix Extended Look on August 27, and after that, the launch quarter that all of this has been waiting for.
