More bad news for those hoping to see GTA 4 become available on modern platforms.
We've got bad news for Grand Theft Auto fans out there, fired up by recent rumors and looking forward to revisiting Liberty City and play as Niko Bellic in a remaster of Grand Theft Auto IV: the re-release of the 2008 title is not coming later this year.
We've already known this was the case for a while, as news of a remaster of Red Dead Redemption 2 (bit soon, innit?) popped up earlier this month. Tez2, one of the more prominent sources of GTA news, recently doubled down on this.
In a thread on the GTAForums talking about a potential GTA IV port, a user expressed doubt about the GTA 4 remaster, to which, Tez2 replied by saying: "Both the IV port and RDR2 next-gen update can coexist and be in development. I don't know when the IV port is planned for release, but it's definitely in development."
A GTA 4 remaster has long been rumored, even as far back as the original release date of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. At the time, the rumors implied that Rockstar Games cancelled the development of the remaster because they weren't happy with the state of the remastered GTA trilogy upon release.
However with Video Games Deluxe, now Rockstar Australia, on the roster it seems like Rockstar is much more confident in the company's ability to deliver and respect their older titles. Take-Two Interactive had recently released its May 2025 earnings report and it confirmed that only one more remaster is coming out later this year.
Given that this is believed to be Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA IV's re-release (the insider clarified that it won't be a remaster) won't be available anytime soon. GTA 4 is one of the most praised entries in the franchise, and a personal favorite among the development team, including former Rockstar North lead Obbe Vermeij.
If it's indeed true that GTA IV has some connection with Grand Theft Auto 6, which isn't due until May 26, 2026, it would make sense to re-introduce GTA 4 to modern audiences within the same release window if not year.
For now, the best way to enjoy GTA 4 is through Xbox's backwards compatibility program on the Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.
