It looks like the GTA 4 remaster might have to wait for a little bit longer.
Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most beloved entries in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, so naturally fans have been wanting to see it be remastered for modern consoles for a long time. Unfortunately, it appears that the rumored remaster (or re-release, if we want to be semantically correct), might have to wait until Arthur Morgan has had his turn in the next-gen spotlight.
According to reliable gaming insider Nate the Hate, Rockstar Games is working on a remaster of Red Dead Redemption 2 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch 2, which takes precedence over the Liberty City escapades of Niko Bellic.
With the Switch 2 release date set for June 5, Nintendo reportedly sees Red Dead Redemption 2 as a major headline title for their new system. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. What better way to showcase the power of your new hardware than with one of the most visually impressive games ever created?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of gaming's biggest success stories, with over 74 million copies sold since 2018. It's the best-looking game made using the RAGE engine so far, showcased prominently on the PC. Although it still runs in backwards compatibility mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, it remains locked at the same 30 frames per second it ran at on the older consoles back in 2018.
For PlayStation and Xbox players, this update has been a long time coming. The technical improvements should be substantial. Current-gen consoles have more than enough power to run the game at 60 frames per second, which would be the most significant visual upgrade.
Resolution improvements are also expected. While the game currently uses a checkerboard rendering technique to achieve a sort-of 4K image, the native resolution on consoles is actually much lower. The PlayStation 5 Pro could potentially use its new upscaling technology to deliver something much closer to true 4K, matching what PC players have enjoyed for years.
The upcoming re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2 could be the closest thing GTA fans have at what Grand Theft Auto 6 could look like on the PS5 Pro outside of the NaturalVision Evolved mod for Grand Theft Auto V.
The Switch 2 version presents an interesting challenge. While Nintendo's new handheld won't match the raw power of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, it should still deliver a significant upgrade over the original console versions.
The fall 2025 release window suggests we're still several months away from finally getting our hands on these upgraded versions. After waiting nearly seven years for Rockstar to give Red Dead Redemption 2 the treatment it deserves, a few more months feels like nothing.
As for what this means for the long-rumored return trip to Liberty City and linking up with Niko Bellic again to play bowling, only time will tell.
Speaking of GTA, Grand Theft Auto III will be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers later this month. GTA V and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition are also available for a discounted price as part of Sony's 2025 Days of Play event. Finally, the long-awaited summer update for Grand Theft Auto Online might be released as early as on June 17.
