Take-Two CEO Zelnick is discussing potential impacts of Trump's tariffs on console sales and game discs.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently shared his insights on the possible effects of President Donald Trump's tariff plans, particularly on console sales and physical game discs. Zelnick speculated that while the tariffs might not affect the sales of Grand Theft Auto 6, and physical game discs in general, he couldn't say the same about console sales.
This assessment aligns with concerns raised by industry analysts, who warn of potential price hikes for both games and gaming hardware if Trump pushes through with the implementation of additional tariffs. While he acknowledged that tariffs might be necessary in certain situations, such as countering economic dumping practices, he generally favors free trade principles.
It's worth noting, however, that the tariffs are not yet going into effect. As of the moment the concerned parties, particularly the United States, Mexico, and Canada, have all agreed to put the issue on hold for 30 days. In the grand scheme of things, that isn't a lot of time, but the tariffs have been a hot button issue and some development is expected.
Take-Two is currently preparing for what Zelnick described in the company's most recent earnings call as "one of the strongest ever", headlined by the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. GTA 6, the first new entry in the series since 2013, is still on schedule for its planned Fall 2025 release, dispelling rumors of potential delays.
In addition to GTA 6, fans can look forward to Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 later this year. The former is set for a summer launch while the latter is the publisher's last release for the year, completing its trio of new installments in some of its best-selling franchises.
With GTA 6 now sure to launch later this year, Take-Two is set to enjoy one of its best years yet financially, with stock price already reaching an all-time high following its February 6 earnings call.
