Leave it to Elon Musk to cause a commotion with another brief but bold claim about generative AI. The tech billionaire, who isn't a fan of the GTA franchise, recently agreed with a prediction that AI could let anyone "generate your own GTA 6 in a few minutes" before Rockstar Games even releases Grand Theft Auto 6 in November (or later, if it gets delayed).

The exchange kicked off when Guillermo Rauch, CEO of web development platform Vercel, posted on X: "There's definitely a non-zero chance we get 'generate your own GTA 6 in a few minutes' before GTA 6." Musk's response? A simple "Yeah." Keep in mind that neither of these two tech executives have gaming industry experience, for reference.

Things got more interesting when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney weighed in - someone who has a stake in the industry, at least. Responding to the exchange, Sweeney wrote: "We have text-to-image and text-to-video, so text-to-GTA is the next logical step in generative AI." Musk then doubled down on his original sentiment, claiming, "You won't even have to ask. AI will figure what video game you'd like best."

With GTA 6 officially scheduled for November 19, 2026, that's a pretty ambitious timeline for proving that AI can create something even remotely comparable to what Rockstar has been working on for over a decade. It doesn't help Musk's case that Grok, the in-house gen-AI of X, is currently embroiled in a controversy for digitally 'undressing' users on their photos without consent - including some underage users. Not a shining example of the technology, is it?

Of course, not everyone's buying what Musk is selling. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has been vocally skeptical about AI's ability to replace human creativity in game development. Zelnick went further, emphasizing that "the tools might be digital but the creative genius is human." When you consider that Rockstar has spent years and billions of dollars crafting GTA 6, it's hard to imagine an AI replicating that level of polish and intentionality in "a few minutes."

Zelnick isn't alone, either. A former GTA 6 environment artist recently offered a stark warning about AI's limitations, noting that while it might help with basic terrain generation, it simply can't meet the quality standards required for AAA game development. Rockstar Games has a reputation for deeply immersive, detailed and handcrafted game worlds that set industry standards - that isn't something a machine can replicate.

The reality is that while AI technology has advanced over time, there's a massive gap between generating somewhat-convincing images or short videos and creating a coherent, playable open-world experience with the depth fans expect from a Grand Theft Auto title. Rockstar has been implementing AI in interesting ways for GTA 6, but that's a far cry from AI building the whole thing from scratch.

At the end of the day, Musk's comments are more about the hype surrounding generative AI than any realistic threat to Rockstar's upcoming release. Will AI eventually be capable of creating complex video games? Maybe. Will it happen before GTA 6 launches in November? That seems incredibly unlikely. For now, fans waiting for GTA 6 are better off keeping their expectations grounded. Rockstar's track record speaks for itself. An AI-generated equivalent in "a few minutes" remains firmly in the realm of bigfoot being in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, regardless of what the world's richest man thinks.

We'll just have to wait until November 2026 to see if Musk's promised AI-generated masterpiece or the real GTA 6 arrives first. If history is any indication, smart money's on Rockstar.
