Leave it to Elon Musk to cause quite the commotion with another brief but bold claim about artificial intelligence.
The tech billionaire, who isn't a fan of the open-world franchise, recently agreed with a prediction that AI could let anyone "generate your own GTA 6 in a few minutes" before Rockstar Games even releases Grand Theft Auto 6 in November (or later, if it gets delayed).
The exchange kicked off when Guillermo Rauch, CEO of web development platform Vercel, posted on X: "There's definitely a non-zero chance we get 'generate your own GTA 6 in a few minutes' before GTA 6." Musk's response? A simple "Yeah."
Things got more interesting when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney weighed in. Responding to the exchange, Sweeney wrote: "We have text-to-image and text-to-video, so text-to-GTA is the next logical step in generative AI." Musk then doubled down on his original sentiment, claiming, "You won't even have to ask. AI will figure what video game you'd like best."
With GTA 6 officially scheduled for November 19, 2026, that's a pretty ambitious timeline for proving that AI can create something even remotely comparable to what Rockstar has been working on for over a decade.
Not everyone's buying what Musk is selling. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has been vocally skeptical about AI's ability to replace human creativity in game development. Zelnick went further, emphasizing that "the tools might be digital but the creative genius is human."
When you consider that Rockstar has spent years, and reportedly billions of dollars, crafting GTA 6, it's hard to imagine an AI replicating that level of polish and intentionality in "a few minutes."
And Zelnick isn't alone. A former GTA 6 environment artist recently offered a stark warning about AI's limitations, noting that while it might help with basic terrain generation, it simply can't meet the quality standards required for AAA game development.
