Rockstar Games putting the Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix first on August 27 is a clever way to reach a massive audience, but it has a side effect that quietly shuts some fans out entirely. In a handful of countries, Netflix simply does not exist, and those players cannot watch the premiere at all.
Netflix, contrary to popular belief, isn't everywhere. The service runs in more than 190 countries, which is almost all of them, but there are a few places where it isn't available. If you live in one of those five places, the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look premiere is not something you can just open Netflix and watch at 3 p.m. ET, because there is no Netflix there to open. Through no fault of your own, the front-row seat is closed to you.
Now, the obvious question. What about the free version?
Rockstar is putting the same footage on its own YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website six hours after the Netflix premiere, at 9 p.m. ET. If you do not have Netflix, you wait six hours and watch it free like everyone else. Under normal circumstances, that solves the whole problem, except, in most of the same countries, YouTube is also blocked or heavily restricted there.
Where Netflix Does Not Work, and Why
Country or Region | Why Netflix Is Unavailable |
|---|---|
China | Never launched, due to strict government media rules |
North Korea | No open internet access for ordinary citizens |
Russia | Netflix suspended service in 2022 and has not returned |
Syria | Blocked by long-standing economic sanctions |
Crimea | Excluded under sanctions, handled separately from Russia |
The five countries and regions where Netflix does not operate, and the reason behind each.
So for four of the five, both doors are shut. Netflix does not operate there, and the free YouTube backup is also unavailable. The Rockstar website itself is reportedly blocked in China too. It is a genuinely unlucky spot to be in as a fan, wanting to see the biggest reveal of the year and having every official path to it cut off by things that have nothing to do with games. Yes, tools like VPNs, which reroute your connection through another country to reach services that are blocked, exist. It is a common method. It's no secret. It's also a fact that in several of these countries, using these tools is restricted or outright illegal with serious consequences.
The Free YouTube Fallback, and Where It Also Fails
Country or Region | Can You Use the YouTube Fallback? |
|---|---|
China | No, YouTube is blocked |
North Korea | No, no open internet access |
Russia | No, YouTube access is blocked or heavily throttled |
Crimea | No, mirrors Russia's restrictions |
Syria | Partly, YouTube access is less consistently blocked |

The cleaner takeaway is a fair criticism of the whole arrangement. Handing a premiere to a single streaming service always draws a border around who can watch. A plain Rockstar upload, the way Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 dropped, is the most open a reveal can be, available to anyone with a connection at the same moment. The Netflix deal buys reach in most of the world, It just comes with a cost that lands on a specific group of fans.
For the vast majority of you reading this, none of this matters, and the six-hour wait for the free upload is the whole story. However, if you are one of the fans in a place where Netflix does not reach, this is why the premiere feels closed off, and why even the free version might not be the easy fix it is for everyone else.
It is not you doing anything wrong. It is a reveal tied to a service that does not run where you are.
The only good news is that local content creators might find a way to circumvent this for you. There's no guarantee, but that's your best bet at the moment.
