If the voice reading "Grand Theft Auto VI" at the end of the launch trailer sounded familiar, there is a reason. It belongs to Jeff Berlin, the veteran announcer Rockstar Games has used to close its trailers for years and the unofficial voice of Grand Theft Auto. Geoff Keighley confirmed it, calling out one of his favorite parts of the GTA 6 launch trailer. "They brought back veteran announcer Jeff Berlin to voice the title, same guy who did GTA4 and 5," Keighley wrote. "What an amazing two decade legacy."

Berlin is not an in-game character actor. He is a professional radio imaging producer and voice-over artist, the kind of voice stations and networks hire for their on-air identity. His regular clients include A&E and Fox Sports Radio. He spent years as the imaging voice of Boston's Kiss 108 and his own bio lists Rockstar among his clients and still describes him as the voice of Grand Theft Auto IV.

The trailer voice is its own tradition. Keighley's word covers GTA IV, Grand Theft Auto V and now GTA 6, the three he named directly, but his history with GTA and Rockstar runs back further than that. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas carries an explicit "Trailer V.O." credit for Berlin in public credits databases. From then on, the same deep voice closing a GTA trailer with the title and rating became a Rockstar signature.

Interestingly enough, most of Berlin's documented GTA work is not the trailers at all. It is the radio. He has voiced and produced in-game station imaging across the series, from Flash FM in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to Head Radio and Rise FM in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Integrity 2.0 in GTA IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony, then Radio Mirror Park in GTA V. He also recorded in-game commercials going back to the early titles. Rockstar has just revealed GTA 6's first six radio stations, the heart of the series' sound and the part of GTA Berlin has worked on for over twenty years. His turning up on the trailer feels less like a cameo and more like a homecoming.

The trailer-announcer role is best documented for San Andreas, GTA IV, V and VI.

Fans have long heard the same voice on earlier trailers, going back to Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 and GTA: Vice City in 2002, but we don't see any publicly available credits for Jeff Berlin for those titles. Also, Rockstar has used a similar deep-voiced title read on the Red Dead Redemption launch trailer and, again, there is no credit or statement tying Berlin to those. Every reliable source, his own bio included, keeps his Rockstar work inside GTA.

So the voice at the end of the launch trailer is a thread connecting the PS2 era classics to GTA 6. Most people will not know the name Jeff Berlin. Yet, plenty will feel the familiarity anyway, which is the whole point of keeping him as the voice who will welcome fans for GTA 6 as it launches on November 19.
