The definitive edition hits app stores at no cost but requires either a $20 purchase or GTA+ subscription after download, with 30 minutes to decide if nostalgia is worth the price.
As of Thursday, September 11, the mobile version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition has officially joined the GTA+ subscription service. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is now technically free to download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, provided you are a member.
Once you launch the app, you're presented with two options: either pay the full $19.99 purchase price or sign in with a Rockstar Games account that has an active GTA+ membership. For those unfamiliar with GTA+, it's Rockstar's premium subscription service that runs $7.99 per month and includes access to various classic titles and exclusive content.
GTA: Vice City's arrival on GTA+ comes just months after Grand Theft Auto III made its way to the same subscription service. This means Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is now the only mainline PS2-era game you can't revisit on your lunch break through GTA+. If you're still on the fence, Rockstar has included a 30-minute free trial. It's just enough time to cruise around the opening areas, complete a mission or two, and decide whether the nostalgia hit is worth the price of admission.
As for the third game in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, don't expect Rockstar to pull it from Netflix anytime soon. The game remains exclusive to Netflix's gaming service, where it has reportedly been downloaded over 50 million times as of this summer, making it more popular than a bunch of newer releases.
Even without Carl Johnson and the Grove Street Gang, GTA+ presents solid value. The service already includes the full Definitive Edition trilogy on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, along with mobile versions of GTA III , Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories , Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars , and Bully. Console players also get access to Red Dead Redemption , L.A. Noire, and the console version of Bully.
With just over nine months until you can revisit Vice City in modern form when Grand Theft Auto 6 releases in May 2026, paying $7.99 a month for a growing library of classic Rockstar titles doesn't seem too bad, all things considered.
