GTA 6 Release Times: When It Unlocks in Your Region, and How to Play Early

The most-asked question about Grand Theft Auto VI that is not "what is in it" is "when can I actually play it?" and the answer, as with every big Rockstar Games launch, depends on where you live. You can't play the next Grand Theft Auto at the same time as everyone else. It rolls out in staggered midnight-local waves, roughly 15 windows spread across about 19 hours on November 19 with New Zealand getting first dibs over everyone else.

After New Zealand, Australia and Japan follow, then Europe, then the Americas, with Mexico and Central America bringing up the rear about 19 hours after New Zealand. Most regions get their own local midnight. The big exception is the United States, which unlocks nationwide at midnight Eastern, so the East Coast plays at 12 a.m. on the 19th while the West Coast gets in at 9 p.m. on the 18th.

Digital preload opens around November 12, so you can finish downloading the game well before it's available to play, which you'll want to do because physical copies are largely a code in a box this time. We don't think that you'll want to miss out by risking a launch-day download. You won't want to be one of the millions of others who will likely face throttled download speeds because they didn't listen.

GTA 6 has a large and expansive map, perhaps the densest in gaming. By that measure alone, you should predownload the game.

With that said, none of this is new or unusual. Despite the occasional FOMO-fueled post treating a staggered rollout as some fresh indignity. It is exactly how Grand Theft Auto V shipped on consoles in 2013 and how Red Dead Redemption 2 did in 2018. Rockstar has always done midnight-local, region-by-region unlocks. The only real difference now is that modern store pages publish their timestamps, so fans can now work things out in advance of guessing.

Because New Zealand unlocks first, players elsewhere have long tried to jump the queue by switching their console's account region to New Zealand. It's a legit workaround and, believe it or not, far easier to do on Xbox, where a region change is a quick settings tweak. Meanwhile, on the PlayStation, you'll need to create a New Zealand-appropriate account and payment method to actually buy and launch the game as if you lived there. Even then, it's not a sure thing. It works for some and is fiddly for others, entirely at your own risk.

If you ask us, we'd recommend biting the FOMO bullet and waiting for a few hours.

Of course, if you are still deciding which console to grab for GTA 6, the easier region swap is a small point in Xbox's favor.

With that said, we can't blame you for giving in and trying. The 19-hour gap between the first and last regions means that players in New Zealand and Australia will have explored much of Vice City and Leonida already by the time you get access to the game. This also means avoiding social media at all costs because of spoilers.

In a nutshell, what you should do is to check your specific store page as launch nears, since these times can still move, preload the instant you can, and keep an eye on the GTA 6 countdown. Nothing has changed. It is the same rollout Rockstar has run for over a decade. The only thing that has changed is that this time, the whole world is watching the clock together.
