Grand Theft Auto VI's age ratings are out and they arrived with more detail than Rockstar Games probably intended. Over October 1 and 2, storefronts and ratings boards switched GTA 6 to its final adults-only classifications, surprising no one. What came off as a surprise, however, was a PEGI content summary that briefly went live on the board's own site that looked a lot more like a mechanics breakdown and was quietly pulled soon after. We covered the first store-listing ratings as they appeared. PEGI's reducted listing is much more comprehensive.
Grand Theft Auto has earned the highest age ratings for most of its modern life and there's a good reason for that. The franchise has never really tried NOT to toe the line between controversy and entertainment. The Extended Look already showed us its fair share of violence, nudity and crime, among other fun activities to do in Vice City and Leonida. The PEGI summary takes things further. For a short window on October 2, PEGI's official site carried a detailed content description that went well past the usual one-word flags.
On drugs, PEGI called the use of drugs "frequent and prominent" and described players taking illegal drugs straight from their inventory, specifically it says that cocaine "can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time." On sex, it listed nudity, "scenes of intercourse" and "occasional scenes of sexual fetishes," and noted that in nightclubs players can pay for private dances and physically interact with the dancers. On violence, it described a high degree of realism, with certain weapons capable of "detailed decapitation and dismemberment," with players allowed to freely harm civilians, criminals and police, along with animals, though with less injury detail.
GTA 6 age ratings by region
Region | Rating | Key descriptors |
|---|---|---|
North America (ESRB) | Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, In-Game Purchases |
Europe and UK (PEGI) | 18 | Violence, Sex, Drugs, Nudity, In-Game Purchases |
Australia | R18+ | Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes |
New Zealand | R18 | Sex Scenes and similar high-impact content |
The high-level ratings arriving on schedule was a formality but PEGI's redacted information was quite surprising, to say the least.
The classification itself was always given. Drug use as an inventory item you trigger on demand, interactive adult minigames and more granular gore akin to Manhunt than past mainline entries are mechanical details marketing are not. Less than seven weeks from launch, a ratings board told us more about how some of these systems work than any trailer has.
The last time adult content and GTA ratings were so intertwined was in 2005 with the Hot Coffee mod, when hidden sexual content in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas got the game re-rated Adults Only and pulled from shelves. Twenty years on, that kind of content is openly built into the rated base game rather than buried in the code and the board is describing it as if it's part of normal gameplay.
Curiously enough, "In-Game Purchases" appear on both the ESRB and PEGI listings, contrasting Take-Two Interactive's confirmation that GTA 6 launches with no online mode or recurrent spending, which is probably true. The label is more likely future-proofing for the online component that will follow.
Regionally, nothing is changed. Australia settled on R18+, not the erroneous X18+ listing that briefly caused confusion, though Australians may still have to scan their face to buy it under newer verification rules once it's fully implemented.
