From Rick Astley to GTA 6, it's a journey through internet history.
First launched in 2005, YouTube is now officially 20 years old and it's celebrating this milestone by releasing a montage of some of the most iconic videos to ever hit the platform, including the first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer.
The video, titled "It's Our Birthday, Let's Party", is a minute-long celebration that contains second-long clips of popular footage, starting with the meme-fied music video of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."
What then follows is a nostalgia-filled trip through what's pretty much the entire history of the internet as we now it as it introduces younger fans to the origins of memes that have become popular over the years. Of course, if you're old enough to have lived through most of them, the video is just as entertaining to watch.
Then, at the 52-second mark, the video includes a snippet of the first GTA 6 trailer, featuring Lucia, one of the two protagonists of the upcoming Rockstar Games title.
It's somewhat surprising and yet, at the same time, also fitting, that GTA 6 is on the video. It's currently the most-watched video in the Grand Theft Auto franchise on YouTube, the second-most-watched video game trailer of all time, and the recognized record holder of several more world records, including the the most views in 24 hours for a non-music video.
To think that this all happened even after the initial announcement of the GTA 6 trailer was leaked and the video itself made its way on X before the official release.
Can you imagine how much bigger the first GTA 6 trailer could've become had everything gone smoothly for Rockstar?
With that said, GTA fans still have plenty to look forward to over the next six months.
Take-Two Interactive is set to hold its next earnings call on May 15 where Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is expected to give more information about the next GTA 6 trailer. Afterwards, the marketing for GTA 6 could start at any moment.
But based on what Zelnick's previous statements, it's possible the next GTA 6 trailer won't arrive until after Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 have launched on August and September, respectively.
Interestingly, this is something that former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij agrees with.
For now though, the only thing that's confirmed is that GTA 6 will be available to play this fall, putting it in direct competition with Ghost of Yotei, which comes out on October 2.
