The GTA 6 hype is so intense that even a retailer’s inside joke about the game's release date has caused chaos on the internet.
Uruguayan retailer XUruguay recently found itself at the center of controversy after accidentally listing September 17, 2025, as the release date for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.
The mishap, which occurred on January 29, quickly spread across social media platforms as eager fans latched onto what they hoped might be leaked information about Rockstar Games' next installment in the franchise. However, the excitement was short-lived as the retailer swiftly removed the listing and issued a candid apology explaining the error.
In the statement, XUruguay revealed that the date wasn't based on any insider information but rather resulted from a newcomer's confusion between GTA 5's release date and the upcoming sequel.

"A new guy tells us the release date of GTA on Google (it was GTA V ) and we said OK, then put it in (it was more of an internal joke that escalated) and then the speculation began," the company explained in their statement, translated from Spanish.
The chosen date wasn't entirely random - September 17 holds significance in GTA history as the release date of GTA V in 2013. The retailer admitted to using this as a reference point, though they emphasized they had received no official information from either the developers or publishers regarding GTA 6's actual release timeline.
Though the incident was a false alarm, the gaming community's swift reaction to even unofficial release dates shows the enormous interest in Rockstar's upcoming title. Currently, the only concrete information about the game's potential release window comes from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, which has indicated expectations for considerable revenue growth in fiscal year 2025.
For now, fans will have to continue waiting for official word from Rockstar Games regarding both the release date and the much-awaited second trailer for GTA 6.
