Robberies in Grand Theft Auto VI involve more than reaching a till and leaving with cash. You can work alone or bring your partner, choose how to open a safe and take stolen goods to a fence afterwards. Earning money also provides funding between some story missions.1
Targets and working as a pair
Business hold-ups, store robberies, bank heists and stealing cars are among the ways to earn money. Jason or Lucia can approach a robbery alone, or they can go together. Working together also contributes to their relationship.1
The vehicle theft reference covers the extra security and ownership problems involved in taking a car. It explains vehicle entry tools, trackers and registration in more detail.
Speed versus searching
How you open a safe affects both the loot and the time spent at the scene. Explosives are quicker but damage some contents. Finding the combination preserves more of the take, at the cost of giving police longer to arrive.1
A safe code can come from outside the shop as well. During TGG’s preview, a fence sent the player a safe code by text while Rockstar developer Rob Nelson demonstrated a store robbery.2
Police can establish a perimeter while you are still inside. Some locations have alternative exits, so getting out is another part of the job rather than a guaranteed clean break after opening the safe.1
When cutting your losses makes sense
In one robbery demonstrated by Rob Nelson, the player character knocked down the clerk without killing her, destroyed CCTV footage and failed to find the safe code. Someone had already reported the crime. The player left rather than wait for the police perimeter to become a confrontation.2
That is a demonstrated outcome, not a promise that removing a mask or destroying a camera always clears the pursuit. The Heat reference explains why different identifying clues matter.
Selling loot and funding the next job
Stolen goods such as jewellery can be sold to fences, and vehicle fences handle stolen cars. Vehicle damage reduces what a car is worth on delivery.1
Money also connects free-roam crime to story progression. Some jobs leave a gap in which Jason and Lucia need to raise funds before the next mission. That can mean robbing a gas station or jewellery store, or stealing a particular car wanted by a fence.3
That does not establish a universal entry fee for every mission. Exact thresholds, typical payouts and the calculation behind each income requirement are not detailed in these accounts.
