Rockstar Interactive India LLP, commonly known as Rockstar India, is an Indian video game developer and a studio of Rockstar Games based in Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore). Established in August 2016, the studio is currently led by director Daniel Smith.
History
Origins and Formation
Prior to establishing Rockstar India as a dedicated studio, Rockstar Games had established collaborative relationships with technology companies in India. Notably, Rockstar had worked with Technicolor India, the Bengaluru-based studio of Technicolor SA, on several major titles including Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, and Max Payne 3.
Around August 2016, Rockstar Games formalized its presence in India by establishing Rockstar India as an internal studio in Bangalore. The company appointed Daniel Smith as the studio manager to lead operations.
Major Projects
Rockstar India was part of the development team for Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in October 2018 to critical acclaim.
The Bangalore-based studio was seen hiring for game testers for an undisclosed game on March 4, 2025.
Expansion
In May 2019, Rockstar Games acquired Starbreeze Studios's majority stake in Dhruva Interactive for US$7.9 million. At the time, Dhruva Interactive held the distinction of being the oldest game development studio in India, growing Rockstar India to approximately 500 employees.
Corporate Structure
Rockstar India operates as a studio of Rockstar Games, which is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive.
As of March 4, 2025, Rockstar India is Rockstar's eighth subsidiary and third most recent acquisition, followed by Rockstar Dundee and Rockstar Australia.
